Does anyone here know what these files do?...
vnetsup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
msnp32.dll
My computer keeps asking for these files at startup, and says it can't find them...it still works okay, though. I just press the "space" bar, and it goes ahead and boots up. I think the last on is something to do with the Microsoft Network?
Thanks...in advance. |

Donny,
As you indicated, that after you acknowledge these error messages, Windows starts normally but without Dial-Up Networking functionality. With computers it's difficlut to assist without seeing it for yourself but the tips below may put you in the ball park.
- One possible cause:
This problem can occur if you install Dial-Up Networking, Dial-Up Adapter, or
Virtual Private Networking and then cancel Setup while the Copying Files dialog
box is displayed. The Dial-Up Networking files are not copied to the hard disk
or get corrupted but the file names are added to the Windows registry. Then when the computer is restarted, the files are requested and cannot be found but could be there and be damaged.
- Another possible cause and the most likely:
This problem can occur if you remove the Microsoft Network components in Network properties. When you do so, a reference to the Vnetsup.vxd or Dfs.vxd file is not removed from the registry.
There are several fixes such as:
Solution 1: Adds the files to your system individually. If everything else works I would probably try this one first: http://www.driverforum.com/network4/577.html
Solution 2:
Manually editing /removing entries in the Windows registry or configuration files (let me know if you need more info on this one.
Solution 3:
NOTE: If you have previously set up Dial-Up Networking and have added items such as phone numbers, TCP/IP settings, and other protocols, record the information before you remove the Dial-Up adapter. Do the same for Network Adapter properties information if a network adapter is listed in Network properties. this will help with the re-install and setup.
To resolve this problem, remove and then reinstall Dial-Up Networking. To do so, follow these steps(Of course some of this may depend on the version of Windows you are running.
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click the Windows Setup tab, and then click Communications.
3. Click Details, and then click the Dial-Up Networking check box to clear it.
NOTE: If you receive the Ndiswan.vxd error message, click to clear the Virtual Private Networking check box only.
4. Click Close, and then click OK.
5. When you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.
6. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
7. Click the Windows Setup tab, and then click Communications.
8. Click Details, and then click the Dial-Up Networking check box to select it.
NOTE: If you cleared the Virtual Private Networking check box in step 3, click to select it.
9. Click Close, and then click OK.
10. If you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.
If any additional protocols are needed, add the protocols using the Network tool in Control Panel.
NOTE: Check with your system administrator or Internet service provider to determine the required settings for Dial-Up Networking and TCP/IP etc.
Most of all have fun!!
Bob
