Mark ,
I am receiving some e- mail JPEG pictures from some family members and friends that have the paper clip advising of an attachment, but after clicking on the clip it grays out the little box that normally I click on and it opens up the whole page to look at the picture . All I can see of the picture is in the preview pane area of the message .
Has something happened all of a sudden , that is giving me trouble opening certain JPEG messages or is it on the sending end and not mine ? I have Outlook Express (version 6) that I got in PACKAGE I got recently , that was suggested by Microsoft that I download in order to install certain security patches etc , for Windows 98 which is my operating system .
Should I change settings or what ? It seemed to happen all of a sudden on some JPEGS but others I can open ok .
Can you give an old computer dummy some suggestions ?
Thanks
John

Hi John--I'm not Mark but....things got a bit strange for me too with my "upgrade" to OE6 (it was part of a whole new computer package and I'm still exploring stuff). Try right-clicking on the preview and saving it to a file on your drive. You can even make a new folder on your desktop for it. Then try to open it. I think Outlook Express has decided to protect you from the outside world. Show that it cares. Isn't that heartwarming? |

Hi John,
You might be able to determine if the problem is on your end by sending yourself a .jpg attachment to see if the problem shows up there.

Thanks Jon and Mel,
I appreciate your responces . I have not tried you suggestions yet but I will consider tonight sometime . I'm off this weekend (gigs) so I have some time to check out the problem .
I think it has something to do with Outlook Express 6 as it had not happened before that unrequested version 6 was delivered as part of Pack I downloaded recently .
If you run across any other method I might try , please pass it on .
Regards ,
John

John,
Hey buddy, I will try and help you out here, but I am a little confused by your post. Lets see...first, you see the email and the paper clip, then you click the paper clip and I get confused there. Normally you click the paper clip and you get the option to "Open or View" or "Save as Attachemt". Do you no longer see this dialog when you click on the paper clip? Let me know, I have a couple of suggestions, but just want to make sure of your problem before I give you stuff to try.
Cheers!
Mark

Mark ,
Thanks and as best I can here is my "path"after receiving an e-mail that has an attachment ( the little paper clip )
Tha paper clip also shows in the uper right hand corner of the preview pane portion of the message page .
Ok - I can see a part of what the wide screen view would show even before I clicked on the paper clip , in the preview pane.
When I do click on the paper clip in the top right hand corner of the preview pane , it will pop up a little small box . Normally , this box will show what type of program the photo is coming in on . I normally can click on the top portion of that little box and it will open up the picture to full view .
On the other hand, sometimes now when I click on the paper clip the little box is "grayed out" and clicking on it will not open the picture to full screen .I can read that it is a jpg type though , in this little box .
That is my problem ! Most times , I can open to full screen ok by simply clicking on the top portion of that little box but recently I have encountered numerous messages that I cannot open using the path I just went through above because the little box info. is grayed out .
Something has changed since I got the Outlook Express version 6 I assume . I just wondered if it had something to do with a security setting of some sort that needs to be changed ?
Mark -- this old computer dummy explained it as best I could so I hope you understand what I am trying to convey !
If it is too much trouble to interpet my explination , don't worry with it and I'll open what I can and do without the rest .
I have noticed on one message only that I could not open ,that there was a yellow line at the top of the page right under the subject bar that said " OE HAS DENIED ACCESS TO THIS UNSAFE E-MAIL " or some wording to that effect . I have not noticed it being on any other of the other ones I could not open to full page however . ! Just one !
Sorry for the book ! thanks for your time and help.

John,
To me, it sounds like your settings for the default program to open .jpg files has been changed to "nothing" some how. Anyway, lets try this.
Goto your "Start" menu
Then go to "Find" and then "Files or Folders" (if you are using Windows 95,98,Me or 2000) for XP users, goto the "Search menu".
Then type "*.jpg" obviously don't type the quotes.
It will bring up a lot of .jpg files. Go ahead and click ONCE on any file. Now that file is Highlighted. Now hold down the SHIFT key and while holding the SHIFT key, right click on the same file. A larger menu will appear.
Scroll down to the option "Open file with" and choose that.
Next select your .jpg file viewing program of choice. I sometimes just prefer Internet Explorer, or Paint.
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT STEP***
After you choose your program of choice, make sure you put the check mark in the box at the bottom that says "Always use this application to open these files".
Then you should be all set!
Oh, yeah, while holding the SHIFT key and rightclicking, don't forget the rub your belly and pat your head at the same time!
Let me know if that works.
Mark

Mark ,
I did the path you suggested . As info. to you , the box was not checked after reaching the bottom ( ie: " Always use this applicationto open these files ")So I checked it !
I had my daughter send me ,again, the photo I was having trouble opening and this time it did allow me to click on the paper clip and open the file . It did not gray out that time. However , it still kept the picture displayed so that you could view only half the picture .
Here is what was displayed in a yellow line right under Reply -- Reply all -- Forward buttons " OE REMOVED ACCESS TO THE FOLLOWING UNSAFE ATTACHMENTS IN YOUR MAIL : PICT004.jpg
I guess some progress was made though, since doing your steps did let me click on the paperclip and it did not gray out the little box that dropped down after clicking .
I really appreciate your help here and if it gets to taking too much of your time , then I'll live with what small problem this situation has created . As I have said I can get most all files open that are jpg so maybe the problem exists with my daughter's computer not mine ! Or, our friends at Outlook Express may have some secret method to stop certain files from opening all the way .
Kind regards and many thanks . By the way , I have always been able to rub my head and scratch my belly at the same time ! I thought you had to be able to do that to play steel !

John, my wife's computer with Windows 98 had the same problem as yours after installing the Outlook Express upgrade to 6.
I corrected mine as follows:
Click on Tools
Click on Options
Click the Security tab
Where you have the optional settings of Internet Zone or Restricted Zone...select Internet Zone.
Where you have the option to select "Do not allow atachments to open that could potentially be a virus",....make sure that option is notselected. Your virus program (Norton or whatever) should be adequate to protect your computer from virus infection.
Apparently the new installation changed some of the settings.
That fixed her computer...hope it works for you.

Gene ,
You hit the nail on the head !!! It solved the problem !!! All the conditions existed that you outlined in your message and when I changed the settings as you suggested , it eliminated the problem ! I do have Norton 2002 so I was not at all worried about getting a virus as that is a fine program .
I want to thank all of the folks who helped and I'll say one more time that the FORUM -- is a great place to learn !! Something as simple as a setting can really screw up a relatively smooth running computer ( or MONSTER as I call it ) -Especially if I did not change anything myself to cause this problem !!I think Microsoft can do about whatever it wants at any tme, to sneek in behind your back like I have experienced with this problem .
If gigs don't get in my way ( as they have been doing for years ) from going for the first time ever, to a steel guitar convention and if you are going to be there, look me up up and I'll buy you a beer !! My reservations are made at the Harvey so MAYBE this year I can attend .
Your instruction /s are very appreciated by me and if other's have had this problem , I'm sure they will thank you as well .
Kindest regards ,
John

John...for petes sake, why didn't you tell us that you had the answer? Do you know how many brain-cells that I expended while trying to solve this problem? (and I need all that I have). www.genejones.com |
