I must've gotten into something weird because all of a sudden, no matter what I do, IE6 resets to some default opening home page that I've never seen before. This happens everytime I reboot the computer.

Also, after each reboot, a new temp IE5 folder (~17MB) is created under "Windows > Temporary Internet Files > Content IE5". I can delete this folder, but it comes back after each reboot.

No matter what I do to the Internet Options, the default home page always resets to this new URL. I've searched for any and all files/cookies pointing to this URL and find nothing. I've done some disc cleaning, etc. and have run RegClean and I find nothing out of the ordinary.

The effect of all this: Anytime I open the Forum or other web pages, I have to 'refresh' the screen everytime I open a new window/thread, etc.

I'm about ready to download and reinstall IE6 (and/or get the sledgehammer). Any wisdom out there from those of you in the know???

Thanks much.

Steve

Steve,

My sister had the same problem with some porno site one of her teenage sons made into a start page. She found out about it when her 3 year old told her somebody needs to buy that lady a dress when she was looking for the Barbi site. I think she turned off her kids computer for the duration after she couldn't fix it.

After watching IE infiltrate all sorts of places on my computer I got all discustard and dumped it. I use Omni web for my OSX mac and Opera on my other computer. Way faster, simpler and less obtrusive. You can filter out pop ups and all sorts of stuff IE won't let you get at.

I just ported over my bookmarks and dumped another product from the Eye of Hell known as Microsoft.

Was it a good site?

Seriously, though (ahem....) , I'm married to PCs (work, etc.) so Omni Web isn't an option. I don't know anything about Opera, but I'll check it out.

Hey! I just downloaded Opera 6.04 and so far I LIKE IT! It's way faster than IE6 (course, it takes a long time to load, perhaps because IE6 is still the default brower), but there are some nice features about it.

It has a great list of default bookmarks for news/sports/etc. pages, and it reads my existing IE6 bookmarks as well.

So far, it's not recognizing any of the Forum cookies, though, as I've had to enter my username/pw for each post. It also takes up a lot of space with toolbars (some of which might be helpful, but are generally just wasting space), but I'll have to look into customizing the interface. If it still looks this good in a week or so, I'll shell out the $39.00 and get rid of the ad banner that is present in the freeware.

Thanks for the tip, Bob.

I would suggest going to http://housecall.antivirus.com for a free virus scan and see if you have picked up a virus or trojan horse. I had a similar problem some time ago. Also be sure you have the latest security patches for IE and your operating system.

Hope this helps,

Lou

Opera on a PC or Linux is simply superb. The Mac version lags behind OmniWeb, as Bob mentioned, but it's not bad.

I've become addicted to the Single Document Interface, which uses tabbed windows within a single browser instance. If you multi-task like me and surf with 5-6 windows open simultaneously, it's unbeatable. Opera had this several versions ago, BTW, way before Mozilla/Netscape incorporated the feature in the last release.

Go to File/Preferences/Privacy/Cookies. Deselect "Throw away new cookies on exit." If you'd like to keep this feature (to retain only session cookies) then edit your cookie preferences to allow cookies from selected sites. Then add steelguitarforum.com to the list.

It also takes up a lot of space with toolbars

You can turn any or all of these off. Go to the View menu and deslect any of the five toolbars you don't want. Also, you can specify where in your browser they appear (top, bottom, left, right).

Also, note the option under View/Main Bar to select either a simple or full display of buttons. This reduces the number of buttons and gives more horizontal room.

If you like to tinker, you can edit the position, appearance, or visibility of any item on any toolbar by editing the Opera.ini file in a text editor.

One of the really great things about Opera(besides that it works better) in my opinion is that it is not interested tracking your activities, collecting information and weaseling its way into every nook and cranny of your operating system the way IE is. Microsoft calls it "integration" but it freaks me out. Run one of those spy ware programs and the amount of activity coming through IE is astonishing.

I had this problem. I posted about it a few months back. I clicked on a link at soundclick and it took over my browser. I reported it to soundclick and they did nothing. The artist is still on the charts. I was able to delete the files.

I tried Opera last year and found it wouldn't load many pages so i deleted it. Does Flash work in Opera?

Just a thanks for the tips, guys. I still seem to have the cookies discarded after closing Opera even after setting the preferences, but I can stand to enter my name and pw when posting. No big whoop.

Not a bad browser.

Steve-- b0b's cookies used to have a time limit(1 year) and maybe that's still true. Go to your preferences, delete the existing cookie(s), then go to your profile and make a 'no change' change in order to generate a new cookie. --Everett

Try this, go to settings, control panel, internet options, click the connections tab, about halfway down, click "settings". About halfway down, under Proxy server, there is a box "use a proxy server" if it is checked, uncheck it. click OK. That might take care of the problem. Good luck.
