I just upgraded to Netscape 6.1 from 4.7 after
getting tired of being repeatly prompted for the past month(s).
The result is that my system is now very sluggish and slow....unbearably so.
Anybody have a similar experience?
Reason? Remedy?

The reason is that Netscape 6.x really sucks. They decided to let amatuer programmers rewrite their browser program for free. The result is so buggy that it's virtually unusable.

I had it in my computer(533 Celeron), it froze up frequently causing me to have to reset or restart my computer. What i don't understand is if they know this is happening to a lot of users why do they tout it so highly. Aren't they embarrassed by the bad press? |

Netscape is now owned by AOL.
Nothing more to say. |

Thanks everyone. You saved me some bucks.
I almost went out to buy additional RAM
thinking it was my system.

Just curious Roy, how much ram do you have? I have 126mg. I also thought that doubling my ram might help run 6.1. So i'm not sure, probably not. |

You can turn the "smart update" feature off in 4.7 click on "Edit/Preferences", then under "Advanced", you'll see "Smart Update". Open that box up and un-check the "enable smart update boxes". You won't get any more prompts.
My advice: Anything that AOL distributes is much like a virus. Uninstall 6.1 and go back to 4.7. Jack Stoner pretty much summed it up here.
Good luck. You'll need it if you stick with AOL's version of Netscape (ps: they did the same thing to Compuserve's software when they took over Compuserve).
