I have a problem I wonder if anyone can help me with.
Quite often on this forum, someone will post a tuning chart or maybe a picture and the entire thread becomes wider than my screen. Necessitating me having to use the hoizontal scroll arrows at the bottom of the screen.
This is very frustrating, since it is not easy to read if one has to keep hitting the scroll arrows trying to cover the area of print that is beyond the screen on either side.
I am using AOL internet to access this forum. Does every body have this problem and if so, is there a cure?
In some software programs they have an option called "word wrap" that will eliminate this enigma.
Does anyone using aol know of a cure? I have looked everywhere and have struck out.
Thanks,
carl |

What is your screen resolution set to? If you don't know, right click somewhere on the desktop (not in a program) and choose properties. Then choose the settings tab. Mine is set to 1024 X 768 which works pretty well in most browsers. You might want to increase this from whatever it is set at.
The downside is the higher the resolution, the smaller the print. With my eyes this can be a real downside.
Factoid: AOL uses the core of Internet Explorer for a browser.

Larry,
I am not at all up on computers, so forgive if this sounds stupid. But what has screen resolution got to do with threads being ok, UNTIL someone adds say a tuning chart and from that point on, just that thread is too wide to read without using the horizontal scroll arrows?
Thank you for responding,

Carl - I use AOL and the same thing happens to me. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it is very bothersome.

Carl, B0b explained that once to me ---- If someone post a wide photo, the text in that thread then becomes wider than our screens. Maybe Bob will get on here and explain it. The photos width can be reduced and eliminate the problem.

A wide picture just allows the text to go that wide. Otherwise is goes as wide as your screen permits. (Hence, your screen resolution.)
After you look at the image, right click on the picture and see if you've got the option to "zoom out". If so, left click it and the picture will most likely fit into your browser.
Hope this is of some help!

AOL's crippled browser probably doesn't support this, but in Internet Explorer and probably Netscape you can use the menu option View - Text Size and choose a smaller font.
When I had AOL, I never used their browser. I minimized AOL after connecting and started the "real" Internet Explorer that comes with Windows. It has more options, plus you can have multiple browsers open at once so you can have one loading while you're reading another. |

A pictures width is measured in pixels. Your screen resolution is also measured in pixels. If someone posts a picture that's wider than your browser window (measured in pixels), you will get a horizontal scroll bar.
You can solve this by increasing your screen resolution. That will give your more pixels across the width of your computer screen. When you do that, it's probably also a good idea to check the "large fonts" box so that the text won't get tiny.
I'm moving this to the Computers forum. Carl, you should know better than to post about computer in Bar Chatter!

I have my screen at 800X600 resolution and sometimes I'll see the widening too. I just assumed it was the size of the picture that was posted. If they posted a smaller size picture it wouldn't cause the "widening".
I have a high resolution 17" monitor (NEC Multisync FE700) but I'm not going to change to a higher resolution as that would make everything hard to read. |

On a similar note, sometimes when I print out tablature from the Forum the right hand side gets cut off. Anyone know a way around this other than saving it to your hard disk and redoing it by hand? Then there's always the problem that when you print it out it seems like one line of the tab will have strings 1,2,3,4 on one page and the other strings on the next page. (Yeah I know, pick, pick pick, whaddya want for nothing???!!!)
Carl: maybe this does belong in computers (technically) but I generally don't read the computers section, and I too would have posted it in a different section. Thanks for starting the thread, as I'm sure that a few others have questions about this too.

GUILTY AS CHARGED
I confess! I purposely generated this thread in the "Bar Chatter" section.
Yep, b0b. ME did it
Here is why. This problem has been from day one on this forum and my AOL browser. It is perplexing, frustrating and in some cases downright futile to try and read a thread where the printed word is twice as wide (in some cases) as my screen. And it is NOT always due to pictures. It is more often than not due to someone later in the thread generating setups and charts showing a given tuning or tab. Maybe these are called "pictures" in computer lore. I don't know.
All I know is it is very frustrating to see a thread degenerate into, IMHO, an unreadable thread because someone posts things that widen ALL the posts in that thread. This seems to me to be unfair to the other posters. Sorry but it is my feeling about it.
Now the reason I put it in the Bar section was I felt the problem to be serious enough, that the more "coverage" it got, the more likelyhood it would be that I would get a legitimate answer.
Such WAS the case. For which I am greatful. I felt the "computer" section was too limited, NOT because there are not computer gurus who frequent it, BUT because most people on the forum I dont believe use AOL and as such may not be bothered with the problem. And putting it in the other category would bring me more chance of reaching people using aol that may have found a cure for it. I will state categorically that IF most people did in fact use AOL, the problem would NOT be here today.
Sorry my good pal b0b. Me was a bad, bad boy.
But sometimes in life; like the time our Lord "healed on the sabbath" situations alter cases.
God bless you all,
carl

Carl:
Try what Jim writes above. When you sign on to AOL, minimize their browser and use the IE that comes with Windows. In both Netscape and IE, you can decrease the font size in the window if it is too large and causes you to have to scroll. Most times, I leave mine where it normally is but occassionally have to decrease the size to alleviate the problem you are talking about here.
If memory serves me, this came up some time ago and Ricky Davis (also an AOL user) had a very good reply concerning the problem and his solution to it, which basically entailed what Jim is talking about.
Hope this helps, and remember, all a steer can do is TRY!!

There are two text-based things that can cause horizontal scroll. One is use of the forum's [tab] feature. [tab] prevents word wrap from happening and preserves white space. A wide chart done with [tab] will cause horizontal scroll if your font size is large and your screen resolution is low.
A more common problem is a line without spaces. This happens when someone pastes a long link to a web page without using the "click here" syntax of UBB code. We moderators try to fix this whenever it occurs.
Increasing your screen resolution and decreasing your font size will help in those cases, too. When a picture is the cause, the font size is irrelevant.
In Internet Explorer, there's a "Text Size" option in the "View" menu, with 5 different sizes. I use that a lot.

By the time I got back to this thread, Bob & Jack had said everything I would have and more. Words can wrap, images (like tuning charts or pictures) can't wrap. The only way out may be between you and your optometrist.

I sincerely want to thank everyone for your help. I do appreciate it. And I believe I do understand the situation now.
What I don't understand is how it is not frustrating to more people.
Decreasing font size is just not a viable solution for me. When a person is nearly 70 yrs old I need dem sapsucker as big as possible
I agree with Jack Stoner. I am not going to change my screen resolution for one small piece of what I use my computer for.
Also, I feel there must be a better answer for this.
Can pictures, and charts not be forced into a given window size? In other words WHY should just one post mess up all the rest? Simply does not seem right that in today's modern technology that 24 posts must suffer because of one post in a 25 entry thread!!
My point is this, force THAT poster to put in a picture, chart, setup, etc that would fit into the normal window or if needs be, let that post be messed up rather than to mess up all the rest just so a tuning chart can all be gotten in the thread.
My opinions of course.
God bless you all,

It could be done by making a rule or sugestion that no graphic be wider than xxx pixels. This can be done fairly easily in HTML if you know html code. If you don't some standard code could be posted.
I just tried it in the feedback & testing section changing the size on the same picture of my new Carter s-12.

b0b has already provided guidelines for picture size. I don't know if it's on here somewhere, but maybe b0b wouldn't mind posting that again. |
