I went to a music show this past Friday night and was blown away by a non-pedal steel playing with a band consisting of Sax’s and clarinets. I am not sure if it was just this steel player’s expertise on the steel; however, his steel sound blended into the band’s sound beautifully.

Admittedly, I have never heard a steel in a mainly sax band before, but my mind has now been transformed into firmly believing that a steel guitar’s sound can fit into any band if played to fit the music.

Have any of you guys ever played your steel in a wind instrument band such as sax’s and clarinets? If so, how did you make out?

Les, i'm just curious, but what sort of music were they playing? Swing, polka, marches, funk?

Les:
I think it's a very natural fit. Going back to the old Western Swing recording--Milton Brown, early Wills, etc. There were horns in most bands, often taking the lead role. And remember, Bill Haley had a steel player blending in with his sax's etc. I've always felt that the steel could/and has, emulated horn parts, and even horn section parts, due to the harmonies available. BTW, my band has some clarinet wailing from time to time!

Yes,
I sit in with a Local Jazz band once a month with Trumpets,Saxes, trumbones and other horns.
They play mostly uptempo big band and Dixieland jazz tunes.
My favorite song they do is a trumbone duo on "Blue Indigo" in which I just play low string lines on C6th like a cello would play.
Lots of fun if you ever get the chance to sit in with such a group. Do it.

Nowadays I often play with a sax--everything from old stds and swing to rock, blues and country--and I love it. It's some of the most fun I've ever had playing music.

Dan, the band was a fifties and sixties dance band so to speak. They played everything from the String of Pearls, to Billy Vaughn's Raunchy , Sail Along Silvery Moon and Melody of Love.

I was mostly taken back by how the pitch (intonation) and sound of the steel guitar augumented and fit into the sound of the Saxaphones. I could not hear any indication of any reverb so I think he was playing a straight up sound from his steel. I thought it was an absolutely marvelous blend of musical instruments.

Yeah, steel guitar and sax blend really well. Have you heard Rob Ickes What it is album. The dobro and sax work great together. Also, Bill Frisell's Blues Dream has Greg Leisz playing pedal and non-pedal steel with sax, trumpet and trombone. It's beautiful.

Doesn't the steel take the trombone part in a lot of swing tunes?
