My late buddy Ralph Kolsiana recorded this swinging version of cole Porter's "Night & Day" at the Chase Hotel, in Santa Monica in 1955. His Hawaiian group was gigging in one restaurant and the jazz group on this track was in the other. Ralph was sort of pushed into sitting in but did a great job by ear with a complicated swing/latin arrangement. This thing is several generations down but still cool. Go Ralph!

Oh, yeah. RK didn't remember who all the personnel were but the bass player was jazz great Monty Budwig for sure and he thought the guitar player might have been Joe Pass (if joe wasn't in jail for narcotics at that period).[This message was edited by Andy Volk on 12 November 2004 at 11:08 AM.] |

Amazing cut! I had no idea Mr. Kolsiana could jam with this degree of sophistication. He's really holding his own with those guys.
I'm only familiar with his cuts from the '30s.
Mr. Kolsiana was a very gracious gentleman. Guitar Player once had an article about him and announced that he had a tape for sale of his old cuts. I sent him a check and asked for his tape. The tape I received had been put together by him personally, including handwritten notes as to the identity of players, the instruments, and the years and locations of where the tracks were recorded.
I think he was touched that people were still interested in his style of playing.

Andy--that was really a blast!I could listen to playing like that for hours--unfortunately there aren't enough hours of steel guitar, live or recorded, in that kind of setting. Bob, full speed ahead!

| Yeah Ralph could hang like a side of beef. BTW,not long before he passed,Ralph had me put together a CD version of the tape Craig mentioned and I made up a few hundred copies. I gave them out at Ralph's funeral and gave a bunch to Faith and the rest of the family. I have a few left for $20 if anyone is interested. -MJ- |
