Hello,
The other night at practice I finally got to really use this Pedaltrain pedal board I built, that has a Keeley Katana Clean Boost and a reissue 808 on it. The 808 by itself sounds "okay", but the 808 with the Katana hitting it sounded incredible, even through the godawful JC120 amp I was using.
Keeley makes some really beautiful sounding stuff, his modded Boss Tremolo pedal is the best sounding one out there that I've heard. On his website, he says Robert Randolph is using his modded Blues Driver and Super Overdrive pedals. Anyway, if you all ever get a chance to check his work out, do so, he makes amazing sounding stuff. The Katana into the 808 was the nicest sounding overdrive for the steel I've ever had, better than my Klon Centaurs, AC boosters, etc. My push-pull sounded more like an old lapsteel through a wide open old Gibson or Fender amp, it was a blast! |

Getting a good stompbox overdrive sound for steel has been trickier than I thought it would be. What sounds great for standard guitar pickups with weaker output frequently doesn't match up well with a hotter steel pickup. The Keeley-modded Boss Blues Driver is working well for me right now-- sounds very musical, and fuller and smoother than the stock pedal. I'd love to A/B it with the Duncan Twin Tube OD pedal, which has been getting some raves around here. |

I've got the Keeley Compressor, but have never tried it with a steel, I wonder if I should lower the attack rate before plugging it in... |

I'm still searching for "the" overdrive pedal for pedal steel. It makes a lot of difference just what kind of tone/overdirve you're going for... in my case, it's a blend between the David Lindley "running on empty" lap tone, and a slightly brighter more fizzy sound.
The best one I ever heard was an original Tube Screamer John Berry gave me when I played with him, but he took it back, and I've never found another one with that same sound.
I had been using a Keely modded Blues Driver, but it just didn't thrill me. I got closer with a Bionix Expandora, and surprisingly, better yet with a Digitech Bad Monkey I got for $15 on ebay.
Still looking. |

If you're looking for Lindley, the Zen Drive is the ticket.... Closest thing to a Dumble I have ever heard, but real hard to get one. Last I heard the backorder was a year... |
