For me it is at about 1:00 plus on the variable impedance dial. There is a spot where the whole lower half of the E9th neck just becomes as clear as a bell. The upper half of the tuning sounds like the old days when steels would split a spleen at 20 yards, but with a touch of smoothness that makes you now want to play above the 12th fret all night long.
You have heard the one liner - "once you have had black you'll"... oh sorry that is for another forum, but you get the idea.
I sold my first BB when I got the FSK, I had more highs than a speed freak, and the BB just did not fit for me. Now I have a Webb and the BB gives me that Fender edge without having to go the dentist after every gig for filling replacement.
Good job Brad and thanks for the 2 day delivery.

I use about noon for E9,
but sometimes higher like 3 O'clock,
depends on the amp settings mostly.
If there is more C6 I tweak the amp brighter
and run the BB lower.
When I switch necks I twirl the impedance too. |

I've found that every pickup has it's sweet spot or sweet zone. Variable impedance loading on a magnetic pickup is an interesting means of "tone" control. Most of us are used to the standard, guitar-type tone control where a specific capacitor value is used to shunt high frequencies to ground thru a pot or variable resistor. Variable-Z loading is somewhat of a different approach. What I think I hear with Vari-Z is not only the control of high frequencies, but it also seems to affect the amount of resonant peaking in the pickup. I do need to research this concept more, and I'm open to any input on this, as I'm not a filter circuit expert. But the Vari-Z control really seems to have a dramatic effect on the overal character and response of any given pickup. It sounds to me like it doesn't simply control the high end. It's a powerful knob when it comes to getting the pickup response nailed.
On my 710 pickup, I found myself dialing in a Vari-Z setting between 10:30 and 12:00. On my 10-1 pickup, I'm up around noon to 2:00.

Very interesting; with my 10-1's I'm between 1 and 2 o'clock. |

I'm set about 12:20 (am, not pm...no, wait, they're both the same).
But for crissake, I forgot about this tool. I've not looked into adjusting it since I got my Truetone in the GFI.
...I want one of Brad's preamps sooooo bad. (Just in case my Mommy reads this.)
