Okay, now this may be a dumb question, but the Forum is for helping, right?
... just rigged an old computer upstairs with a new monitor & speakers & band-in-a-box so I could move out of the damp basement for practice. Trouble is, the new speakers give off an unacceptably loud hum, almost a buzz. I tried hooking some old speakers up, same problem.
I know it's probably a simple solution, but it's evading me. What can I do?

Try a different miniplug socket, maybe you are using the microphone socket? Or else maybe your soundcard got damaged in the move?
Maybe push it in the PCI slot properly. (open the computer). It can't be the monitor or BIAB.

| If your speakers are powered, you should use the line out jack from your sound card (if you have one). Otherwise with the speaker out plug, you'll be overdriving the speakers' amp. |

| Well, here's one thing I've noticed; when I move the mouse around or am doing anything else on the computer, the buzzing totally stops. Does that provide any clues? |

I don't know what kind of speakers you are using. The speakers designed for use with computers have special shielding. If your speakers don't have this, it could be the source of your hum.

I don't want to take away from the question at hand, but I'm kinda new to this band in a box thing. As I understand it, it is rhythm tracks stored on a computer to play along with. Is that right? Do they still make them and how expensive are they?

This is a four-year hiatus from my original post, but may be helpful for others who have buzzing computer speakers.
I was using an adapter plug with the wrong voltage for the speakers. Lesson: use the right tool for the job!
