With just a few hours notice, I saw that Lindley was playing solo in Somerville, MA last night and caught the gig. Wow! He's not a huge influence for nothin'! More often than not, he played a trio of great-sounding Weissenborn-style guitars including a bass/baraitone that sounded like piano. His fingerpicking technique is flat out astonishing, complete with rolls, patterns, flamenco flourishes, bass runs and precise melody playing all delivered with careful attention to detail and string separation. Sounded to me like he was in open E, C, DADGAD and maybe C#m for one tune. I've never heard a lap steel sound so complete. I never missed a rhythm guitar - let alone a full band. His Oud and Bouzouki work was equally frightening. Here are the rest of the gigs on this tour - catch him if you can:
11/11/2004 The Turning Point (evening with) Piermont, NY
11/12/2004 Satalla (evening with) New York, NY
11/13/2004 World Cafe Live (Tim Farrell) Philadelphia, PA
11/14/2004 Blue Moose Cafe (evening with) Morgantown, WV
11/15/2004 The Winchester (TBA) Cleveland, OH
11/17/2004 Shank Hall (TBA) Milwaukee, WI
11/18/2004 Martyr's (evening with) Chicago, IL
11/19/2004 Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse (evening with) E. Lansing, MI
11/21/2004 Cedar Cultural Center (Adrian Legg) Minneapolis, MN
11/22/2004 Keyster’s (evening with) Urbandale, IA

Dang! Wish I'd known. We don't get many chances to catch players of his caliber up here.I do see Robert Randolph is at the Avalon on Dec.4. A good chance to see what he's got going.

thanks for the Lindley heads up. I'll go see him in Minneapolis. I saw him there twice before; I live less than a mile away. the last time it was spur of the moment. I walked and got there early. so I went around back to 'relax'. a door popped open and it was David. he made a funny face at me. I got to sit front row and when he came out he recognized me. he made that toker motion and winked at me.
his playing is inspiring. Dont ever miss one of his shows!

He's supposed to be in my 'neighborhood' (Scandinavia) in July/August next year, so I've put the local festival promoters on the job. Guess that's about my only chance to see him live, so I hope it works out.
I got his latest CD, "Live In Europe", a while back, and it's great!

I caught David Lindley in North Carolina last week at the Visulite Theatre. I was blown away. He is a master. He played & sang and put out the sound of two or three people. A true talent.
Another thing that impressed me, is how nice he is. He came out into the theatre after the show to talk & sign autographs. He took all the time needed to talk to each person. Not just a quick autograph and on to the next person. He really took time with everyone that had something to say to him.
I have a National Dynamic that is the twin to his off white/green one that he has played since his Jackson Browne days, & I got him to autograph it. When he saw it he said, "Hmmmmmm....let me see that". He looked at it from all angles, then pulled it to his chest like he was hugging it. He said "You really have something here, don't ever let it go". If any of you get the chance, GO SEE HIM!!!

I played one of his Weissenborns the last time he was in town. He was using what he called the Leo Kottke tuning on them, which would be (in C, Low to High) CBCBCE.

His playing kills me.

Sounds like a great night. Are any of his CDs just solo like that without a band?

All his earlier solo CD's (not the El Rayo X stuff) are just him and a drummer, no overdubs (usually live recordings). I've also heard a bootleg tape of him playing solo, but I wouldn't know how to get a copy of that.

Dan Tyack - Shouldn't those "B"s be "G"s...?

Thanks for the heads up, Andy. I saw him this evening (well, yesterday technically) and yes, everything you said. He plays flat out great rhythmn on his "Weissonborns". A very funny/weird and entertaining person. What a player. I thought I heard a D tuning on one of his guitars.

Well, David lindley was the first of a marathon music weekend here in the Big Apple. After Lindley, I shuttled over to Birdland to catch the last set of the Django Fest headed by Dorado Schmitt. Tomorrow (technically today) I'll head for the PSGA show in Norwalk. After that, back to Manhatten where I have tickets to see The Campbell Bros. and the Derek Trucks band. Sunday eve it's back to Birdland for two sets and the last evening of the fest. Then monday night The Moonlighters at The Rodeo Bar.

Other than that, nothin' doing.

Don't forget to go home to shower and change clothes, Howard!

Harry Manx is another wonderful player who's on tour now. He has a beautifully designed new website with all the tour dates: http://www.harrymanx.com/
