I've never used a delay before and like the sound of it when used modestly. What unit would you recommend to buy AND what settings seem to work best for normal playing (ballads not speed picking)?

The Boss DD-3 and DD-6 are simler. The DD-6 has a few upgrades like stereo output and tap tempo capability. The DD-3 is cheaper and without those features.
I forgot to mention if you buy a DD-3 the one made in Japan is the best of the DD-3's.

"Delay" is not rocket science, it just makes the output a little fatter. It's like reverb, "just a little dab will do it".

Just to confuse the issue a little more, Boss also made the DD-5. I have one of these and I think it is closely akin to the DD-6.

The DD3 is a bit sweeter toned, to my ears, than the DD6.

Thanks for the replies. How many "echoes" sound good? 2, 3? With reverb or without?

There was a post by Paul Franklin (later deleted) where he said he liked to use about 210ms of delay, only one repeat, very subtle in the mix.

I like the way that sounds on most tunes. For a slow ballad, I'll dial in a little longer delay, about 300ms. It needs to be very subtle, though

In both cases, I use the delay with reverb.

I'm with Lee; I use 2 repeats at VERY low volume, to fatten things up. I never turn it off, actually; it's a rack Ibanez DD1000 and it is very warm and grainy for a digital unit. NO reverb though. muddies up the water a little too much.

The dd-6's best feature is the tap tempo...you hold down the pedal for 2 seconds then tap your foot on the pedal to get the delay you want. Hold it down for another 2 seconds and you go back to on/off mode.

I have both and I use only my DD-6 and I use it with steel and guitar.
