I recently picked up a quad-4 Stringmaster off of e-bay. I received it and it needs quite a bit of restoration to get it back on its legs again. It has been refinished in the past so I can't find the date written under one of the tuner pans, however, when I was taking off the cavity covers on the bridge end, the serial number was: 0002.

I recently restored a T-8 Stringmaster that had previously been refinished also and I found after stripping the paint out of the tuner cavities that the original penciled in date had survived - in all three cavities. If you're careful perhaps you'll have similar luck. -MJ-

Michael,
I think I'll give that a try. I'm sure it's approx. a '54 model as it has the lollypop tuners and the chrome covered pickups without the blending knob.

Erv,

Can you post a couple of pix of this ax? I'd like to see it.

Thanks,

Kobe

Kobe,
To tell you the truth, at present, it's not in any condition to take pictures of! I have it completely torn apart. The necks are in 4 separate pieces and the rest is in a big box. I should have taken some pictures of it before I dismantled it but too late now. You'll have to wait until I get it back together again. It will have to be refinished. Somebody spray painted it a light blue.

Gee Erv, maybe you should paint it in the classic "Lake Placid Blue" from DuPont. I redid a '66 P-Bass like that a while back. It was spray painted (spray cans actually) Black with a mirror pick guard when I got it. Really ugly!! UGH!

But I remember your Stringmaster T-8 redux and it really turned out nicely. So I expect this one will as well.

Kobe,
Yes, I sure hope so. At the moment I'm using up a can of Plastic Wood trying to fill up some spaces that some joker gouged out in the electron cavities. Believe it or not, instead of using the slide switches to turn on the individual necks, he drilled a hole and installed an output jack for each neck! I did an internet search the other day and found some 3/8" chrome plugs in a warehouse in Tucson, Arizona to fill the holes. What an age we live in!
BTW: I have a '55 Precision Bass that I bought new. It is blond and in such good shape that it doesn't need any refinishing!

A previous owner refinished my Stringmaster a sort of Sonic blue. On most days, I'm not in love with the color. Sure sounds great.

Andy,
I think the paint must have come from the same store! Thats just about the color of mine. Maybe I should leave it that color and just use it to play the "blues". Sorry, I just couldn't help it!

My stringmaster looks like it was painted this blue color at one point after they drilled for pedals. What was up with this color. It must have been very popular?

There was a picture of a blue pedal steel on one of the posts here. It was played by someone in, I think, Loretta Lynn's band and everybody had instruments the same color.
