Topic: Altec 418B speaker---what's the power rating? |

| I've been using the Altec 418B speakers for about 1 1/2 years now, and love them. I play them through my 100 watt Twin Reverb, and never have any problem pushing them. I would like to sell an extra pair I have, and have been asked by someone interested, "How much power are these rated for?" So if anyone has used these speakers and knows a little about them, maybe you might know the answer? Thanx in advance!! |

Here you go........
According to my Altec datasheets the 418-B is a 100 watt musical instrument loud speaker with a cone resonance of 55 Hz and sensitivity of 99 dB 1W/1m. Operating range 45-8000Hz.

| Thanx Roger, I run a pair in my Rick Johnson cabs, and never had them falter. I love the tone of these speakers. They work well with my shobud. |

James I have never played through that particular speaker that I am aware of, but it looks like that it is a very effecient speaker @ 99 db SPL and would be a good speaker for Steel Guitar.
The best JBL I have ever had was rated at 103 db SPL and was a very loud speaker. |

My FAVORITE steel guitar speaker of ALL TIME -- bar none.
Yes, it's rated at 100W. I have one in each of my 1970 Standel Custom 15s. They 'bloom' at a lower volume than a D130 and I've never blown one. Can't say that for a D130.

They are a very fine speaker. You have to be careful with them as the paper cone is much thinner than the JBL. They have a different sounding top end as a result of the thin cone. They can give out as I have experienced. I have also had JBLs give out too.
Problem with the Altec and the JBL speakers is there are no original cone kits for them. You have all these speaker gurus reconing them and claiming this and that, but to my ear, NOTHING sounds like the original Altec or JBL cones in these.
If they are the white frame Altecs with the grey magnet cover they are rated at 100watts.
