i just go a morrell little roy wiggins steel, and i played my first gig with it last night. it sounds great at stage volume! way better than i thought it would. there's two things i'd like to improve on it; i'd like to widen the string spacing a little bit. any ideas on a better bridge?
those cheap tuners feel like there's sand in the lubricant. where can i buy 8 grover rotomatics?
thanks, john

Hi John, How's it Twangin'? That's one smokin' steel! www.allparts.com will make up an 8 string set of grovers. The stock tuners do feel whimpy.
I have a little roy too. String spacing at the bridge measures 3/8", but the cheesy plastc nut is cut narrower. Im going to make a new nut out of brass or bone and widen the string spacing out to 3/8" as well. It will be easier to play single not, Dobro style riffs.
The volume on my high string is lower than the rest due to the stck pickup being too short, and when the string space is widened ,it will make it worse. SO, I have an old GL 10 string E-66 laying around, and will route the cavity to drop it in.
The old stock pickup will be stuck in a strat later.

That's a good idea about using a larger pickup. Loni, i have the problem of the 1st string being too soft on most of my steels. Have you ever tried using a pickup with adjustable pole pieces?

Hi Dan,
Pole piece adjustment is good for balance, but when the pickup's just too short, and the high string is past the magnets edge, forget it.
I use P-90s and humbuckers and you can even things out with the pole screws pretty well, as long as the strings pass directly over the screws. Of course any pickup with a bar/blade magnet will eliminate that option.
