Indiana's Phil Bender (now a Floridian) has contributed his tasteful 1993 recording of the classic Hawaiian tune "Waipio". Phil recorded this in 1993 at the Aloha International Steel Guitar Convention in Winchester, Indiana. L.T. Zinn is on rhythm guitar, Bud Tutmarc on Bass, and Ken McClary on uke.

The tuning is C6. The guitar is a Jerry Byrd double neck Excel (see picture on Phil's page).

Enjoy!

Thanks Phil!

First, Gerald, let us all thank you for what you have brought to the HSGA Website. The great music, by some of the best "pickers" in the world is the best PR campaign one could have ever wanted. And your time and work there, and on this Forum, is deeply appreciated.

Second...to Phil Bender. Marvelous "touch and tone." In fact, it is the most skilled accomplishment of the "Master's" style that I have heard...and I've been listening for a long time (I'm a senior citizen ). All three of your songs posted by Gerald are marvelous pieces of musicianship. Great work...even greater listening.

Thanks to you both.

Sadly, Ken McClary passed away not too long ago. He played very nice steel, (which was seldom heard). However whenever he showed up at conventions, you would hear some great ukulele from Ken as he backed so many acts. He was a very quiet unassuming person whom everyone couldn't help but admire.
