Evans Hybrid Amp Question

How about some input on the Evans hybrid
amp. I see them for sale on rare occations
but no one comments on things like their
weight, cabinet size and how well they sound. Are they rated at 300 watts? and
approximate cost new.

I used to have one. They are OK. Not spectacular. The so-called tube preamp is not impressive. The Nashville 112 is much better tonally.(and more dependable) The one on ebay is at 455.00 as of 9am Central. I would not pay that much for it, especially since it has a Scorpion speaker in it. Now, if you could get it for 300.00 plus shipping, that MAY be a decent deal, but it would have to be in emmaculate condition. After shipping, your looking at well over 500.00 for it.

Jim: Not sure, but it looks as though Tommy Cass may be selling the one on ebay now.

I have a Hybrid 300 (kinda in pieces at the moment...). Awesome sounding amp with a tube preamp into a ss power amp. If they redo this, I hope they beef up the power amp section. It seems it was about 80 watts and underpowered, and mine, along with several others I knew of, were prone to blowing all the output transitors at the wrong time (as if anytime were good ) as well as part of the power supply. Put a FET500 power amp in it, and it would be great.
But man, the preamp sounds great. I finally gave up on the power amp after it blew for the umpteenth time, and just used the preamp, mostly for direct sessions.

One of these days I will rebuild the old one.

Good luck on the venture--I will surely consider one for sure...

As for the vintage, I bought mine from Tommy Cass around 73/74ish. I think Jim was hand-bulding about 30 a year back then.

I have a Hybrid 300 I purchased from a forum member last year, and it's a perfectly wonderful sounding amp. I corresponded with Jim Evans, and he very kindly offered much good information about these amps. I believe he said the tube pre=amp circuit is exactly the same as the circuit in the new models. The only problem I've encounterd is that the reverb is very weak, and has a loud hum. This,I'm sure can be remedied by my amp tech. I use a digital reverb, so this really isn't an issue. I realize tone is a subjective thing, but I don't believe a Nashville 112 is superior in tone to these amps. Power wise, it does't have the gusto of my FET500, but it's still plently loud and clean. I find I can get more variation in tones from the Hybrid than the 500, probably due to the two separate channels, as opposed to the single channel in the 500. To each his own, but to me," One of our old Dinosaurs," as JE called it, is OK by me. Regards, JL

I just ordered a new SE200 with the SES200 ext speaker. I spoke with Scott up at Evans and he assures me with all the R&D they have done, it will be a killer system. I will find out in about 3 weeks when it is shipped. Also, they have a 10 day trial period. I can ship it back if I don't like it, just out the shipping costs. John Hughey supposedly told another customer of Evans that the total solid state was the way to go unless you're doing lot's of studio work, then the hybrid might be better. If anyone understands differently, I would love to hear about it.

Danny, I have an Evans SE 200 ( 2003 model ) that I just converted to the tube pre-amp. It now has a nice warmer, compressed sound at lower volumes, but not so noticeable at louder band levels.

Jerry, Scott at Evans told me that if I wanted to try the tube pre-amp, that he would ship it to me. He says it's easy to drop out the solid state pre-amp and put the tube one in. So, that might be a good idea to have both. What do you think? How does it compare to a Nashville 1000 if you know.

Danny, it took all of 30 minutes is swap preamps, just had to notch out the cabinet support so the tubes would fit. I kept the SS preamp too, and if I wanted to go back, a simple 15 minute job. I have a Nashville 400 and just got a Fender Twin Custom 15. I have come to think no amp is better or worse, only different. I gig regularly with the Evans, lighter in weight. Scott is a good man, easy to work with and very helpfull. The tube preamp warms up your sound at lower volumes, but not so noticable at high levels.

Jerry, I appreciate it. I haven't run across many members here who have a recent model Evans, so your input was very helpful. I hate spending that much $$ for an amp, but I heard Hughey playing through it a few months ago and it was very nice. Now, Hughey always sounds nice, but I'm talking about quality of amplified signal. Did you get the SES200 ext speaker? I hear that makes it sound even better.

Danny, yes they are kind of pricey, maybe thats way I dont have the ext speaker. I dont feel like the single speaker is lacking anything sound wise, but I have not tried it with the ext speaker. If you do use the ext speaker, let me know what you think.
