Can somebody tell me what size screws I need for mounting my effects and mixer in my rack case? The rails are already tapped and threaded. Thanks

| They are 10-32 if you have the threaded rack rails. If you have the type that uses the "clip" type (like the SKB cases) it is a different size. |

Terry, 10-32 works in my SKB. Be sure and holler at me at Ronnie's show. You need to give Ronnie a call to see if he has any spots open, or email Rev. Wayne Smith.

Jerry, the screws that came with the SKB "speed nuts" on the two SKB cases that I had were a different thread (coarse thread, not the 10-32).
Same way with a couple of "commnications" racks I had where I worked that used the speed nut system - they were a different thread than the standard "RETMA" 10-32 rack screws. (I only had over 40 communicatons racks where I worked for modems, telco equipment, patch panels, etc).
ADDED: I never tried a 10-32 in the speed nuts - apparently from your post they work. We just used the special screws that the vendor supplied with the racks (as I did with my SKB rack cases).[This message was edited by Jack Stoner on 12 May 2006 at 03:36 AM.] |

My experience is the same as Jack's.
10-32 for the predrilled rack rails.
The racks using the speed nuts were cheaper to make because they were not threaded.
The screws used in those were more like a sheet metal screw.
In the days when I was doing a lot of rack installations, I always carried a 10-32 tap and a die.
Many times the rack rails would need to have the threads cleaned up in order to work properly.

Usually the rail threads, on new racks, had paint in them (after being threaded) and that's why they needed rethreading.
However, the rack screws we had were "self tapping" type and if we ran across a "bad" thread the self tapping rack screws would take care of them. We bought the racks and rack screws from "Stantron" (now a divison of the Zero Corp - a hell of a company name) in California.

Oh, Mark, you are so right. We could have some fun comparing "war" stories.
Jack, the self tappers sounds like a nice idea. I've used some Stantron racks but not that model.
Yep, I've seen the paint in the screw holes, also some that had chips in the holes and some that were evidently done with a dull tap.

Cool, next time I have to build up a few racks with a couple hundred screws I'll call you guys over to install them all with a hand driver for me so that I don't ruin all the rail threads with my motor! Be sure and bring your hex drivers, though, there are no slot or phillips screws in these racks....
