I've been recording with an Ampeg V-2 thru a K-130 and it sounds terrific. It's my understanding that the V-4 is about twice as loud (around 130 watts). They even have a 3-way ohm switch (at least the V-2 does).
It just seems like a nobrainer for anyone who loves their 85 watt fender, but needs more power sometimes. I don't think I can remember ever seeing a steel player using one.
I think it's going to be my next amp, so yall don't jack ebay prices up on me.

I don't know about steel players, but the Rolling Stones used Ampeg for the "Sticky Fingers", "Let it Bleed" era stuff. Great tone, methinks. I would really like to find an old Ampeg Gemini with a 15". |

Cliff, Guitar Center in Tuksa Ok. has a Gemini with a 15 in it. I believe it has tremolo as well. Looks pretty clean for it's age. |

John,
Back in the mid 70's,when I was w/ Tommy Overstreet,we were endorsed by Ampeg. We started w/ VT-22's,which were "self-contained",i.e. amp & spkrs.(2-12" Altec-Lansings) in one cabinet. Since these were all-tube amps, they were quite heavy.(as you, probably, already know. I inquired as to getting a "piggy-back" version. Ampeg said,"No problem". What we got were,V-4 heads,(identical chassis as in the VT-22),and VT-22 extension spkr. cabinets. This worked out a LOT better, since it "split-up" the load.
I REALLY liked these amps. GREAT for "sit-down" gigs. Not so good for "1-nighters"! (unless you have a "roadie" that is.)

I had a V-2 for a short time in the 70's, then traded for a V-4 stack, had 2 4x12 cabinets. Gosh that thing was heavy. If there is a amp that has more clean power and tone I'd sure like to hear it.
We had two of them in the band. Mine was the stack, the other was a V-4 head and halfstack cab with the optional speaker upgrades.
Always wondered if the VT22 would be a good steel amp. I think it would.
I remember one weekend I had my V-4 head in the shop for service - they loaned me a new Fender twin to use with my cabs for the night, just hated it. It seemed so weak and thin compared to the V-4.
I always thought the V-4 (and the V-4B bass amp - also the original SVT with 8x10 cab) were about as good as it got at any price.
Those were the good old days

I haven't played bass professionally for a long time, but back in the 80's and even into the 90's the V-4 was the gold standard - built like a tank and it would blow down walls. If for some (strange) reason you got in a war with the lead guitarist's Marshall, he'd lose. The weight was sort of like Emmons P/P's are today - complaining about it was a sign of cowardice, puniness and maybe worse. |

David,
Apparently, you had "roadies" to carry your equipment around.

Oh,Yeah!!! I just picked up 2 V-4s in Dallas, and couldn't be happier. Way too much power for the K-130, but the Black Widow works great. More later.

I think you might be on to something Buck, but bass players have made SVT heads extremely pricey. They are very in demand these days. |
