Can you tell me what's the purpose of
the phantom power switch on my Peavey XRD680 power mixer

Hi Lonnie, The phantom power switch is there to supply 48 volt power to condenser microphones such as a Peavey PVM480,Shure SM81, Beta 87 and other similar mics that require "phantom" power to operate. Your typical microphone(Peavey PVM22/46,Shure SM 57/58 etc.) is a dynamic mic and does not require this voltage to operate. It's called phantom power because the 48 volts is supplied through the mic cable on pins 2 and 3. Here's a link that might help explain.
