My Webb has begun distorting slightly at any volume. Its not terrible, and I still use the amp for performing, but if you listen closely it is detectable. At any rate, the amp no longer has that perfectly crystalline sound. I suspect it may be the speaker, which is a 4 ohm JBL K130, but thought some of you Webb owners (or others) may have a suggestion. No idea how old the amp is- serial number looks like 857. Thanks in advance- Chip

Sounds like speaker to me. I had my K-130 reconed 3 times before I got a BW 1501 last year. That K-130 will be a dust gatherer for a while now.

Chip:

Does it distort with the equalizer switched in or out? I had a similar problem sometime back and it was the equalizer toggle switch. However, if it distorts in either position, then it probably is the speaker or output transistors. You might try plugging in another speaker if you have a spare cabinet, just to make sure.

The amp is probably from the late 70's.
Jump over to another speaker. It's the easiest
thing to try first. Other common problems with
the old Webbs are the EQ toggle switch & bad
contacts on the internal connector plugs.

I plugged into my Webb a few days ago and heard some pretty noticeable distortion that I had never noticed before. Tried several things to correct the problem and realized that I had placed a 3 ft. El Cheapo cord between my volume pedal and DD-3. I replaced it with a Geo. L cord and the problem was gone. Now the really wierd thing is that the cheap cord did not cause a noticeable distortion with my Nashville 1000.

Just wanted to say thanks for the replies- I'm going to try the speaker first. Unfortunately the only other amp I have around is a Princeton Reverb. I'll figure something out and post what I come up with.

Dirty input jacks can cause a lot of problems. I would clean all the jacks, then check out the middle selector switch on the Webb.

That EQ switch is most often the culprit. DPDT toggle.

Chip, make sure that your Sensitivty setting is on "10". I chased distortion for a day before I realized that my Sensitivity was turned down to "6". It will distort on that setting.

It really shouldn't distort when you turn
down the sensitivity. You're just reducing the amount of signal from the pickup to the first stage of the preamp. I don't think mine ever distorted.
