I and my friend each replaced stock pickup of Excel JB Frypan with Jason Lollar's real horseshoe type. It was a big success. Before we re-did wiring, pot value etc, we checked DC resitance of the Excel pickups and the meter read incredible figure, that was around 1000KOHM or 1MOHM. Is this normal? Before the Excel pickups were removed, both were working fine.

Sounds like the pickup is open to me. A typical reading would be between 7K to 22K with modern guitars being between 17-22K. Here's a link that explains somewhat, what an open pickup is.

Another possibility is an inaccurate meter or a lack of understanding how to use the meter. Try measuring the resistance of a 22k ohm resistor or any value in that range.

Maybe you read the meter wrong. It could have been 10,000K.

Slap it over to AC ohms and try it again. Impedance happens with alternating current, resistance happens with DC. |

Thank you folks. After all tries following your advice, 1000Kohm still stands.
- Is the pickup "open"? : I can't tell for sure but it sounds all right.
- Inaccurate meter? : I use two meters, digital and analog. Both are not for pro-use but do their job fairly well. Checked with 50K resistor and 1M pot and they read fine.
- Read the meter wrong?: Likely. After big booze I saw my wife pretty.
- AC ohms?: My meters can't measure impedance.
I shouldn't be paranoia too much on this thing as I will not put the pickup back to the Excel frypan. But---you know, just curious.

Hello Jack.
If the pick-up still works when connected, there is a mistake in the methodology of the reading !!
.. at the moment I am getting VERY close to suffering from "karoshi" !!!
Anything of 'Jules' that you want tabbed ?
BTW how accurate did you find the 'Sand' tab ?

Baz,
---methodology of the reading?? I put glasses on, the pick up placed under the reading lamp turned on, what else missing?
I sent you an email on the second half of your post.

Jack..
You conjure up a picture of a man squinting through thick lenses !!
That's NOT what I meant..
I mean maybe the meter is being misread like the decimal point isn't being taken into consideration..
Still problems at my end here Karoshi (???) imminent !!
Too much work .. Not enough time left to accomplish it all !!
BUT, I am trying (So I've been told)
Baz
BTW Belated Happy Birthday.. Over here that milestone would entitle you too free travel and various other dubious benefits..[This message was edited by basilh on 09 March 2006 at 08:33 AM.] |

1 meg might either be the top of the meter scale at that setting or it may be whatcha got given that the coil has gone "open".
Whaddaya get at max/peak scale across your fingers? I get about 12 meg from one thumb to the other (with the test lead probes) on the 20 meg scale on my Bechman HD-110T DVM.[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 09 March 2006 at 12:34 PM.] |

Ahhh ... you were the two guys I made those magnets for ... they are the last of their kind ... enjoy.
Oh ... my Excel (mid 80's) JB Frypan's stock pickup is 14.24 K Ohms ... just went down, dug it outta a box and measured it for you.

Rick,
Yes, we are very privileged to have your last works of art. In the opening post I wanted to give a big fanfare to the excellence of the replacement pickup made jointly by you and Jason but rather opted to give a low-key comment because I was afraid that anyone who gets interested in the pickup would be disappointed as it's no longer available. Rick, we really wish you return someday soon to the wonderful world of HORSESHOES. In addition, I treasure the frypan knob you so kindly hand made for me.
Thank you so much for taking troubles of metering the Excel pickup. I will have it checked by Excel to conclude the mystery once and for all.

1,000kohms or 1 megohm means it's open. Sounds to me like you damaged the old pickup when you removed it. |

Could it be that there is some built-in internal circuitry?
