Right now I am using a LR Baggs I-Beam Active pickup with the Para Acoustic DI preamp ....I was wondering if anyone has used the Para Acoustic DI wtih a McIntyre Feather pickup ? .....I would like to have replies from folks who have used BOTH the McIntyre Feather AND have also used the I-Beam ..Which one did you prefer in your acoustic and why ?......Thanks, Jim |

On my Superior Weissenborn, I have the Baggs I-Beam and a Sunrise pickup. These are fed into two separate channels of a Marshall acoustic amp and then the signals are blended. The Baggs picks up the sound from the body of the guitar and the Sunrise picks up the sound directly off the strings. Sounds quite nice.

I put a McIntyre feather in my beautiful Tut Taylor resophonic (dobro). I hated it so much that I sold the guitar, just a horrible thing . I use Sunrise pickups in my weissenborns and there wonderful, huge sound and well worth the price. |

Thanks for the reply guys.....They're appreciated
Erv, I've been considering the same setup in my Lazy River Weiss .... I was just curious if the Feather sounded better than the I-Beam .....The Sunrise is not for a natural sound, but for an "added " sound that is rich and full without feedback ....What jack are you using for your 2 pickups ? .....Do you run both pickups into a stereo jack or ???
Thanks, Jim
Bill,
Sorry the pickup did not work out for you..
I"m not sure I know of ANY pickup that really works well for a Reso ....Mic's and a feedback eliminator seems to do the trick for me, and it's still questionable at louder volumes !!.....Jim[This message was edited by James Quackenbush on 03 March 2006 at 11:32 AM.] |

James,
Yes, I use a stereo jack and run a stereo cord into the amp.
BTW: I use the passive I-Beam pickup. I don't like the idea of having to get inside the guitar to change batteries. My Marshall acoustic has a boost switch for the pizo pickup channel.

Erv,
Thanks for your reply.....My battery clip on my guitars equipt with the active I-Beam is very near the sound hole for ease of changeing ....The battery seems to last FOREVER !!.....Thanks again , Jim |

I have an acoustic pickup, I forget the name, that is active but the chord coming from the guitar is stereo into a little external preamp and this feeds the juice to the pickup and then out to the amp with a regular cord. Neat!

In a resophonic that I set up for gigs, I was using a "Shatten (SP, may be Schatten)pickup which is made in Canada. It was installed in an inexpensive newer Regal that I upgraded with better internal parts and it sounded fine, very much like a miked guitar. The pickup is mounted on the underside of the cone and all parts are included for installation for both types of resonators. |

I like Erv's set up with the blended Sunrise and the I-Beam. Sounds to me like a good way to go. I Blend my Sunrise with a SM57 mike and have had very good results. I'm thinking of giving the I-Beam a try. Is the I-Beam harsh sounding or prone to feed back like the McIntyre feather?? |

Bill,
I think that in a lot of cases with just about any pickup, if you use a sound hole cover ( not if you're not mic'ing the guitar ) you will not have as much of the feedback problem...Trouble is with a Reso, there is nothing you can really cover and there seems to be a LOT of feedback problems....There are problematic frequencies with ANY pickup, but with the use of a notch filter, or a soundhole cover you can reduce the problem ...Jim |

Thanks Jim
Great site and great sound. I have a new "Celtic Cross" Kona coming in the late spring and I just might go with a I-beam to keep the Sunrise company.
I tried just about everthing with the McIntyre feather, amps with anti feed back control, several different pre-amps, repositioning the feather on the cone and covering the feather with masking tape. Over all the sound was about as musically inviting as a Gerbil peeing in a tin cup.

Bill,
That's the setup that Erv is using....I'm gonna give that a shot also ....I haven't heard too many good things about the Feather setup, so i will stick with my I-Beam and add the Sunrise for a little diversity ...I listenned to the Sunrise that is built in on the new Carbon Halua lap and it sounds INCREDIBLE !!....
BTW ....I have a lot of samples in my sample library in my studio, but a Gerbil peeing in a tin cup is one I missed !!...
Sincerely, Jim |
