I recently did some research on a pedal called a Decimator from ISP Technology. I first heard of this unit from my friend Hal Higgins, a great steel player. I think that he has used one and may have more info on this. I borrowed one from a local music store this weekend and tried it, and it looks like it works. It has a dial knob to dial out the 60cycle frequency. I think that it may slightly affect the tone, but about like that of a humbucker pickup. I am going to research it some more, but may get one for studio use. I hooked this one up in between the guitar and the volume pedal. Has anyone else had any experience with this? It looks like at least a partial solution for single coils and studio use. I would appreciate any input.More info on this can be found at www.isptechnologies.com.

Danny, building a notch filter that removes the frequencies associated with 60 cycle him is really easy. The problem then becomes sound quality. The frequencies associated with the 60 cycle hum, when eliminated, leave an unacceptable hole. I know because I have tried it. I am working on another approach this very day.

Thanks Keith, you are right. This unit will kill the hum, but I find that it made the single coil sound more like a humbucker, reducing the "crisp" sound. However, I like to play live with my single coil pickups. This may work for studio purposes, I am going to experiment a little more. I hope that you are successful in your developement of a "cure"! Let me know and I will be your first customer. Thanks for all that you do for the steel guitar industry.

Looks interesting. From their website, http://www.isptechnologies.com/decimatorpedal.htm

From the original inventors of HUSHâ„¢ noise reduction ...

The nice part about this ISP unit is that it's fairly inexpensive and available as a foot pedal. But it looks, more or less, like a modified Hush noise gate - a "controlled expander" type of system. I looked at reviews on Harmony Central:
http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/ISP_Technologies/Decimator_Noise_Reducer-1.html

There are a lot of varied opinions.

You might also look at this concurrent forum thread of single-coil noise reduction:

The Presonus DEQ 624 discussed there offers a very different approach, but the downside is that it's much more expensive. If I can get my hands on one of these, I'd like to give it a try. I think the Presonus is overkill for what I need. Thanks for the info.
