After you check out the Revelation Tube Pre, check out an old or new Alembic F2B. |

I'm using an old Rocktron "Sidewinder" Preamp. Surprisingly it works great with steel and with my Tele.
It even has a stereo "line level" effects loop that a lot of new preamps do not have. That is a plus as almost all the rack type effects processors are "line level" units. |

In order of my preference: Roland GP-100, Peavey Tubefex, Bassfex, Profex 2, Transtube fex. I find the best sound and verstility I get is from the Roland unit.

I have a Revelation coming next week.
I don't need to hear it in advance.
I have a Black Box with vari-impedance,
and played through an 1st generation BB in St. Louis.
I have no doubt it is an amp for my studio or live rig,
that I will be happy with for a long time.
It goes right in the studio rack, and directly into recording tracks.
I have a TransFex 212 stereo amp, and a TubeFex external unit too.
I like them both also.
Input to the Protools direct will be through the
Revalation ( or through amps and cabs),
or the TransFex amp with two mics
and the BB right after the pickup.
Either way Brad's boxes in between strings and recording setup

Brad's Revelation pre seem's to be the hot ticket these days....If you don't want to spend as much money
1) Older Mesa Boogie Studio...Great tone with plenty of tone shapeing
2) Alembic Pre...any of them ( modeled after Blackface Fender ) simple , but very well made and sounds great ..
3) Roland GP100...you can use this as a pre with effects, or just use the effects that are EXCELLENT ...
Hope this helps.....Sincerely, Jim

FWIW
Somewhat outside the lines.
A blast from the past is the Peavey VMP-2. 2 channel all tube preamp. Treble and Bass only for EQ. Wonderful sound. Sometimes available on Ebay around $1500.
IF you wanna go over the top, have a look at the Avalon 737sp. All tube, 4 band EQ all tube, and tube compressor. About $1,800. It does not mind being overdriven. The musicality is amazing.
Both of these are 2U rack units. Robust enough for the road. Quite heavy.
Or try Brad's new revelation preamp. I think it has it all.

A few days ago,Doug(Earnest Bovine)Livingston and I had an impromtu preamp shootout over at my studio testing and comparing several preamps for steel - Brad's unit among them. I normally record using an Avalon 737 and Doug had a Revelation which he really liked and to be honest everything sounded good in it's own way. But both his Franklin and my Excel both sounded best thru a Fender Steel King coming out of the "preamp out" and going directly to the board - which I'll be doing from now on. Who knew?

The last CD I did (back up for a singer) I recoreded the steel directly from the Nashville 112 "line out" (XLR jack) on some songs and on others I miked the Nashville 112 with an SM57. Couldn't tell any difference between the two on the recordings. However, I tried (for a test) an SM58 and the SM57 was better. |

I use a Mesa V-Twin rack preamp with a 2/90/2 - Nice and clean or dial in as much grit as you like to add in. The 2/90/2 will knock your socks off.... |
