This is the first time I've attended and I'm enjoying it immensely.
I'm listening to many wonderful steel players, singers, and uke players. The people here are very welcoming, friendly, and that makes for a comfortable convention.
There's a variety of non pedal, or pedal free steels here too. Very cool to hear & see a variety of playing on a variety of instruments, both acoustic and electric.
The jams are fun, and that's where some of the best playing happens. And, it happens on different music also. Hawaiian, Hawaiian swing, swing, western swing blues, bluegrass, & country. One of my favorite scenes was watching Jeff Au Hoy play bass on several bluegrass tunes.
More to come and hopefully some photos. |

Are any of the shows or jam sessions being recorded? Board taps? Bootlegs? |

Well, I won't be able to post photos 'til I get back to the Apple. My 7 year old lap top needs some configuration and I don't want to waste my time here with computer junk.
Mike, I fondled your Dustpan. Sorry
Maybe I'll try one out later when nobody is watching.
The show is being recorded. The jam last night was not.
I often wonder what they do with the show recodings. Every steel show I've been to has been recorded, but I've never seen anything available for the general public.
I'm looking forward to seeing Duke Ching, Bobby Ingano, and Jeff Au Hoy this afternoon. Bobby Ingano has played nothing but the Dustpan everytime I've seen him. I heard that they are flying in a surgeon to remove Bobby from the Dustpan. |

I showed up late Thursday afternoon and stayed till around 11:30 that night. I heard some wonderful music. It was a great introduction to Hawaiian music and everyone was very friendly and informative. Forumite Chris Kennison (Seldomfed) and another guitarist put on a seminar about slack key guitar that answered a lot of quesions I've had about the subject. I also got to meet L.T. Zinn, which was truly an honor. I will definately make it next year. [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 16 October 2004 at 01:13 AM.] |

Howard - sounds great. Do you think audio or video will be produced? Such would easily trump the current "reality shows". - Bob |

Bob, I agree and would love to have videos of all the steel shows around the country, as well as Europe.
Yours is a question that would have to be answered by someone involved with the HSGC. Perhaps an answer will appear on this thread.
Anyhow, the big luau is tonight. I'm getting my luau shirt ready and I'm going to do some Hawaiian weight training. It's called "Slack Belt"..... |

Hey Bob - nice meeting you. The other guitarist doing Slack Key was our own Bill Leff, who is a fab. jazz and slack key guitarist, his steel ain't to shabby either!
I too would like a video of my playing, (not really, but the doctor says I have to face my pain before I can move on - how do we get in touch with Paul? I forgot to get his info.
