I have a MosValve 500 power amp and a Peavey DPC-1000. I've also tried a DPC750 and a Carvin 2600 power amp.

The MosValve 500, which was designed for instrument amplification - not PA or general amplification - wins and the others are not even close, for steel amplification.

The Peavey DPC amps are clean but they come across as slightly "sterile" and with a Peavey Transtube Fex I lost a lot of lows and body that I only got back when I went back to the MosValve 500.

There are many that are using the DPC amps and will disagree with me. But, my own personal experience is the MosValve 500 (and the reissued MosValve 1500) wins.

QSC and Crest power amps are far superior to Peavey IMO. Popular among bass players, who often are looking for the same thing as steel players - a wide tonal range and monstrous headroom.

The Peavy power amps I eequate to Carvin and other mass-market stuff. Decidedly "eh"....

Rick,
A Mossvalve 1500 weighs approx. 40#, 2 rack space, and the 2 I owned had SORRY pots in them. IMO, The Peavey DPCs are far Superior.

Peavey also owns Crest.

By far, the best rack mount power amp I have ever heard is the VHT 90/90. I ordered mine with the warmer 6L6's and it is incredible.

Had you thought about a Stewart power amp? I have two World 1.2 power amps by Stewart and I cannot imagine any better sound and power than what either gives me. It is at least two thirds lighter than the Mossvalve and only takes one space in your rack.

Rick, trust your ears. When you ask an open ended question about a product you will receive dozens of answers and still not be able to make up your mind. The Peavey DPC amps were designed for good clean transparent signal reproduction. A power amp really should not effect the tone of the instrument; only the speaker, cabinet and preamp should alter the tone.

What price are you willing to pay for this "amp"?

How much power is suitable for your application?

Are the speakers suitable for the amps power rating output?

You asked for opinions !! I've been using a DPC750 for about 10 years and it has always been awesome, regardless of what I hook up to it. It is lightweight(about 12lbs) , 1 rack space, and has more grunt than I have every required for any gig - including playing with a full orchestra. And as Mike says, it is very clean. I have had it serviced once which is pretty good for 10 years, and I have played this beast on average 3-4 nights a week. Mostly I have used a ProfexII, Korg DTR1000 and Black Box with it - into 2 Nashville E115 BW boxes. It is the sweetest steel rig in my little world mate !!

"Peavey also owns Crest"

But they don't put the Peavey label on it, do they?

I was just rendering my opinion. Peavey and Carvin stuff has never impressed me. As far as power amps go, Crest and QSC do - and I've used all of them in the past.

Fender owns SWR, and there's a big difference between Fender and SWR bass rigs.

Peavey own's Crest ? ....How cool is that ?.... If I run a tube preamp, I generally run a S.S. power amp .....If that's the case, I like the older Crown DC300's .....If I run a solid state preamp, I will run a tube power amp, and that would be the VHT 2:90:2 but I leave the KT88's right where they are I've heard a lot of good things about the MosValves when the pot's are good, but they are notorious for having bad pots ........Jim

I'm just curious about the power amps and other things that increase power, tone, etc. I've always just used amps with maybe a little delay/reverb. I know this probably sounds crazy but how are you players that are using "power amps" and such working your extra equipment in with the 1000's,112's & FSK amps for example. I've pretty much always been a steel/amp man that's worked on the right hand touch for years to get tone, etc. I'm always looking for new ideas to improve tone/sound. Not being negative here but I just never explored this area of power amps and such. I'd like to hear from some players as to what there using and how it's hooked up. Thanks.

MosValve 1500, TubeWorks RT-921 reverb and a
9002 Pre-amp. Good Combo! Add your favorite rack effects.

If I were searching SGF for information on recommended steel guitar power amps, I would never think about running a search for "Your" or even "OPINION". We should all try to pick a topic that can be searched. Just a thought. Please don't take it personal.
