Can anyone give me some feedback on a Fender
1963 reverb unit. My old amp has a poor reverb, and I wondered if anyone could offer
suggestions good or bad.I have an opportunity
to purchase one. This is the self contained box type reverb unit.

Thank you.

There definitely are alternatives. Including
various pedals, rack units etc. Does your amp
have an effects loop? If not, that Fender
reverb will sound good, but add alot of hissing
noise when plugged into your amp's front input
jack.

It's probably worth more as a collector item than it is as a valuable accessory. It's big, bulky, and "bongs" a lot. You'd be much better off with a stomp-box echo/delay pedal, IMHO.

Probably cheaper, too.

Dan... Forget the 1963 original OR a re issue.... Noisy, TOUCHY as hell,,.. I had both . an original and a Re Issue.. They sounded good, but cut a lot of gain and were a big nuisance to use.. I sold them FAST... Try a Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb.. I CANNOT tell the difference with my eyes closed from a Fender Tube/Spring unit... NO ONE can... Easy to use and you WILL get a warm clean "Fendery" reverb! bob

Thank you, upon your advice I have decided against the Fender 63 reverb unit,,now I have to decide on a Boss RV5 or a Holy Grail.

Which of these two would be the bes. I have no effects loops on my amp I have to go direct into the amp..thanks for the sound advice on the Fender help me make a choice please

Thank to all of you

The RV-3 is a delay and reverb or both pedal. They are not made anymore, but surface for sale periodically. I use one and the sounds produced are excellent. I don't use the reverb on either one of my amps, even though they have good reverbs.

Dan.. They are both good.. The Boss has a little more flexibility, but has a more "digital" sound... The Holy Grail sounds like a Fender tube/spring reverb... really top notch .. it is far and away the best sounding outboard reverb I ever heard in the price range.. I was using a 1963 original Fender, and DITCHED it in favor of the Holy Grail.. The unit is THAT good... pretty cheap too!... bob

I read some reviews on the Holy Grail unit. Lots of people rave about it, but a significant amount of people complain about hiss, at least at certain settings. Anyone want to weigh in on this issue?

I ditched an RV-3 for an RV-5. It has a far superior reverb (IMHO), but no delay built in. Had a 1965 original Fender and sold it for $900.00 on FleaBay! Never tried the Holy Grail! Bet it is a nice. The RV-5 does have some white noise, all I I have tried have it. Not noticable when playing

Alan--as I have written elsewhere, my experience is-----I have one that is around 3 years old. It has more hiss than it should when run straight into the front of an amp. Thru one of my rigs with an effects loop it is dead quiet. I used a brand new house unit at a session recently that was totally quiet either way. Paying attention to other online discussions I deduce that the noise issues may have been solved and that therefore I would recommend buying new rather than used unless you can trying it out.
And in spite of the hiss I still do use mine because it sounds real good.

I have a 63 reissue I bought from a Forumite. He was a non-pedal player , and decided he did not need it in his sound. I believe he replaced some of the tubes, but it is dead quiet. Best reverb I have ever used. I have a RV-5 as well. Sounds good, but just a little sterile. My 2 cents.

I use the Holy Grail on the front end of my amp and it works fine. I use it on sessions that way with no problems. It is plenty quiet. I know producers that bring them to every session. Another nice thing about the Holy Grail is that it is made by a real mom and pop business over in Queens, NYC, USA.

The Boss unit is not near as transparent and did not cut it in the recording environments I work in.

I owned an RV-3 for awhile and sold it. The reverb is obviously created by digital delay when listened to closely and is unnatural. I would stay away from this unit. Haven't tried the Holy Grail so can't comment on it.

There are other outboard high-end tube reverb units that you might want to look into, but they are pricey.
