Help folks,
Been a Peavey man for many years and own 3 but I have the need to buy something since my tone is still less than desirable to me. Any thoughts or experiences regarding these two amps. Pros and Cons... Thanks
"FSK" and Webb 614
Oh yea I also own a Evans I don't use. And here is a tip,I keep the covers off all of them so my wife thinks I use them all.

Gordy,
If you can find a Webb in good condition - buy it. You won't regret it. There is something about that amp that makes a steel come alive. It is too bad they are no longer available new, but there are plenty of people around who can service them, and really are a unique amp.

I just might, I see Mr Boggs has one for sale but without the Original speaker.
I already have a few Black Widow speakers, so I want something different.

My Evans is an SE 500 I think, Small cabinet 15" 250 watts, has the white piping
around the grill.. I think I bought it new about 97, but honestly I only used it out maybe 10 - 12 times, and now I just keep it my music room.
I play (pick) hard and the Peavey amps just seemed better on stage for my style. But now I feel the need for something new......

If you do a search on "Fender Steelking" I'm sure you will find a lot written about them. I have had mine about 10 months and I really am very happy with it. It weighs in at about 64 lbs. so its no light weight.About the same as a Nash 400. But the tone is Fender all the way. Not "tube-y"
but still Fendery just the same. Plenty of head room and very easy to dial in a good tone, IMHO. But like I said, do a search and youll see many, many others agree.

| I have a Webb, and also have a Steel King.....I can get the Steel King to sound very close to the tone of the Webb, but there are setttings on the Steel King that I can NOT get on the Webb ... I LOVE my Webb, but I also LOVE my Steel King....Both great amps .....The Webb seem's to be a little bit darker in tone ....They are both about the same power wise, and volume wise ... You won't go wrong with either amp......Jim |

You may not want to hear this but, some of the best sounding recorded steel was cut on Peavey amps. I know, there are many other great amps, and I own most of them, but you might want to look closer on why your tone is not up to your standards.

You are right about the Peavey amps, I agree, the best steel I ever heard recorded or live was an Emmons through a Peavey. But I guess the players had a little to do with the tone as well
I guess the answer is buy one and try one for me. Although I have to admit since I started this post I have gotten more good comments on my tone then ever and some from other steel players, so I guess it's just me.
Fessy through a Nashville 1000 with 710 pickups.....But I also like my Mullen HWP
through my Session 400 LTD....both these amps sound similar but feel different.
Nashville 400 I own, I just could never warm up to even after the Mod installation..

I'm not sure how far away you are but I'll be playing my Steel King at the York Fair in York, PA next Friday. If you haven't had an opportunity to hear one in person, and it's not too far away, come on out and see what you think.

| Since '79 I have been a Webb Amp person (still love them). However, a couple of weeks ago, Pat Coyne and I dropped by Bobbe Seymour's and I tried his Webb and the Steel King...frankly, I'm going to look at the Steel King shortly...it sounded very good! |

I have them both and really like them both.
The variety keeps me interested. I'll get tired of hearing myself sound the same so I switch between the two as the mood stikes and also switch between 2 different guitars for the same reason. You really can't go wrong with either amp. |

Here's one more tidbit for everyone. I just sold my Webb because I heard Randy Beavers playing a steel king at the phoenix show. It was excellent. He got "that sound" we all want. I also now enjoy the sound of a Steel King attached to my guitar & volume pedal. I've always been a Peavey guy, but not anymore.
