Greetings, everyone! This is my first post on this forum. I have a Chandler RH-2 lap steel and I'm really enjoying it. My amp is a Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. It sounds great with the Chandler. I kinda backed into this whole lap steel world by getting the Chandler after reading the positive reveiw in Guitar Player Mag. I also got The Art of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar by Stacy Phillips, who happened to join the forum the same day that I did, and also Lap Steel Guitar by Andy Volk. Both of these are great books! Being fairly new to all this,I have a couple of questions. What tunings are good for the setup I have, I usually play in Open G [low bass] or D. Is C6 applicable to this gear? Also I have Gibson B-25 acoustic[late 60's model]. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this would make a good lap steel? Thanks in advance! Richard Parker

Welcome Richard. You will find just about as many opinions as there are tunings. I started on C6 just for the shear amount of material available. Steinar Gregertsen is a Chandler guy I think. Maybe he will chime in or you can go to his website at www.gregertsen.com (it's been down a bit lately but give it a try). You can also email him steinar@gregertsen.com - he's a great guy and will love to talk "Chandler" with you.

Again welcome - the Chandler is a beautiful guitar!

Welcome to the board! C6 should work fine, bUT you will need lighter strings in the bass. You could try E6 with a G# on top with your current strings just to see if you like it.

Hey there, and welcome. The tunings don't really match the gear so much as they match the style of music. And even then, the better you get, the less the tuning will matter.

What kind of music interests you? That would be the best place to start. I started out with the music of David Lindley, Ben Harper, Bob Brozman and to some extent Leo Kottke. So for me, Open G, D and C were all I needed or wanted. Later, I came to like Junior Brown, and so decided to explore the C6 tuning a bit. This led to discovering people like Jerry Byrd, Joaquin Murphey and Don Helms. But my point is that exploring the different tunings came out of wanting to play certain kinds of music. So for me, that's what comes first. Explore the music you're interested in, and see where that takes you, rather than trying to start out with the "right" tunings and all that.
