my black box, which i adore, started making snap crackle pop noises. since i do not use any other effects i removed it between the output of the guitar and the volume pedal which silenced the noises and made it clear how much it adds to the tone when it doesn't make those noises. i tested all of the george l cable used in the hookup seperately and there was no added noises. the volume pedal is a passive pot franklin pedal. any ideas on this before i contact brad?

If the Black Box has a tube in it, I'd try replacing that first...

Ed--that can definitely happen. A perfectly good sounding/testing tube can just go south out of nowhere. Some labels even have a reputation for doing that although Brad cetainly does his homework and uses tubes with good track records--JJ Teslas, I believe? Anyway, swapping the tube is certainly the first thing I would do. And it's really the only user fix. Anything else should be left to Brad to check out.

hmmm. Unfortunately I think most music stores will probably have stuff like Sovtek and that's not really recommended. My advice is to call or go online here:
http://www.eurotubes.com/index.htm

I've had numerous great dealings with Bob and his turnaround time is exceptional. Get right on it and you might have your tube Friday.

Just FYI, that ECC82 also goes by the name 12AU7---one and the same. Good luck.

I would call Brad Sarno and let him advise you on it. That way there would be absolutely now doubt about anything. Just my opinion.

I would have expected no less from Brad. I knew it was just a matter of his finding out about the problem.

Also not unusual for that type of problem to be cured by cleaning a tube socket and tube pins...

That's why I quit using tube amps many years ago. When I used a tube amp every day, it was a routine procedure to wiggle the tubes in their sockets before every performance. If I didn't do that, I might be playing the Rice Crispy song without warning. I do not intend this to say anything bad about Brads Black Box. I am sure it is a fine product. I just mean to offer a hint to check that socket connection if you do hear the Rice Krispys. My problems were caused by Fender amps that had the tubes hanging under the amp chassis. This caused the heat to rise and heat the socket. I don't think this would be a common problem with the Black Box.

And use a good anti-oxidation spray on the contacts befor inserting the tube.
This makes the time between incidents much better.

When I rebuilt my Twin Reverb and put it in a new cabinet I installed a small muffin fan to circulate air around the tubes/transformer. I think all tube amps should have this feature.

Sorry to hear that you gave up a good tube sound because of the woe's of tube maintainance ...I get more noise from single coil pickup's, but I'm not going to give them up for humbuckers....You're missing out on a lot of great sounding amps !!.... I do have to admit though that the Solid State amps like the Steel King, and the Webb have me scratching my head a bit .... .....They sure sound tubey to me !!......Jim
