When the Paul Beard Signature resos were mentioned, I checked the goldtone site, and saw that they offer new weissenborns.

Certainly more reasonable than anything else I've run across... are they halfway decent (read: worth the $), how do the different models compare soundwise?

How much, typically do they run for, as compared to mfg'r list price?

Thanks in advance folks.

Nicholas:

There have been a couple of previous
threads about the GoldTone Weissenborns. They've received mixed reviews -- I was underwhelmed by the laminated model, but would like to try one of the solid-wood guitars.

(I got a chance to play a GoldTone/Beard Standard reso yesterday -- IMHO, it's an unbelievably good guitar for the price!)

Does anyone have any further feedback on the solid-wood GoldTone Weissenborns? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hi Nicholas - I was inspired by some forum buzz about Weissenborns, including the beautiful sounding/looking one (Mermer) that Dan Tyack has recently gotten. Since I'm a stone's throw from Berkeley, CA, I went over to the Berkeley Musical Instrument Exchange, and tried several of theirs - fine sound, fine looking - consistent quality control for the 5 guitars that I tried. They have a slightly wider string spacing per suggestions by David Lindley. I'll probably get one a few gigs from now. They cost less than Gold Tone. Best of luck! - Bob

Bob,

The Superiors are nice, and the guy at Berkely is willing to deal and I think you get a lot for the money, look close at detail and pick a good one. I thought the materials were good and the one I had for a while was really loud. It had the select spruce top. I ultimately sold it to finance my Benoit reso, cause I'm a blues guy and it was a better fit. Had I been a bit wealthier I'd have kept it.

Chuck - thanks for your advice. I'll be going back to spend some more time trying the Berkeley Instr. Superiors. I know what you mean about the blues and reso affinity. Thanks again. - Bob

I had a chance to try one of the laminate Gold Tone Weissenborns today, and I also was not impressed. But I haven't tried any other Weissenborn-style instruments. I have a dreadnought size Seagull guitar set up with an extension nut now, and it sounds much better than the Gold Tone, particularly in the bass (and cost quite a bit less, too). So I'm curious - would you expect a *good* Weissenborn to have comparable bass response to a dreadnought size guitar, or if I like that kind of sound should I stick with what I have?

I may be skating on thin ice here since I'm no luthier, but I would say that a dreadnought in general has a softer sound because of the deeper body. So a weiss will have a different bass respons, but not necessarily weaker, and a sound that you might perceive as a bit harder.
Don't expect it to sound like your Seagull, I'd say they complement each other and you definitely need them both!
