Topic: Need recommendations for buying an amp |

My story is that I want to upgrade from my 20 watt lap steel practice amp to an amp having enough power to do small venue gigs and my budget limits me to $300.00.
What models of used amps should I be looking for that 300 bucks will cover and will be reliable and as trouble free as possible?
Fender makes a solid state amp that sells for around $300.00 new on the discount music store web sites,but I don't know if solid state is really good for lap steel sound wise;most players seem to like tubes.

| Although a little more than your $300 limit, the Peavey Nashville 112 makes a great "lap" steel amp. I've been to a couple of jams and several of the lap pickers were using them. |

Thanks,Jack!What in the design of the Nashville
series makes them especially suitable for steel compared to other amps?Did Peavey especially shape the circuits to sound better with a steel guitar?

Malcomb...indeed, consider the NV112. Keep saving until it's in your budget. This is a remarkable little power house of an amp. My back thanks me every time I pick it up, and the tone is unbelievable.

Yes, Nashville 400's show up all the time right around $300.
Actually, one just sold for $300 here on the Forum; and a 112 sold for $385.

Just MHO, but; I don't have any thoughts of ever buying another S.S. of any brand either for PSG or Non-Pedal since switching back to an All~Tube Amplifier! To me a S.S. has a hard/artificial sound. However, after saying that, I must also say that S.S. Amps do have a very pleasing sound! I guess it’s just a matter of which type of sound you like best!

I have read several internet comments from Peavey owners stating that Peavey has the *very* best customer service in the world of music electronics,period.
It is very unusual for an amp company exec to offer help like this in an internet forum!
I am very impressed with your kind offer.Actually,I had recently been looking at used(due to my budgetary limitations)Peavey amps on eBay.

Hi Malcolm, I heard Mike Sweeney playing thru a 112 on Broadway the other night and it sounded killer. I would reccomend one to any steel player.
Although I didn't lift it up it seemed to look like it wasn't a back breaker.
