Tim,
I put a JBL, E-130, 15", in my Nash 400, several years ago.I think it's the way to go for that amp. All the notes, from bottom to top, seem to sound sweeter and more pronounced. The speaker was well broken in ,though.I had been playing through it for a few years. I couldn't make a comparison with a new one, but, the seasoned JBL sounded better than the seasoned Black Widow, hands down. |

I've got the same speaker in my Randall and I'm keeepin' it there. The combo you are asking about is what I ask for when I'm not providing my own amp. |

I had the same speaker in a NV 400 for years. I thought it sounded great, and I never had any problems. Your JBL is probably an 8 ohm speaker and a NV 400 wants to see 4 ohms, so you are giving up some power. But the mismatch never had any negative consequences for me. I still had all the volume and headroom I ever needed.

Tim,
I have a NV 400 that initially I thought was ok but not great. Attempting to improve it, I tried the LeMay Mod, the Peavey Tone Enhancement Mod, The Metzger Mod and it started to get a bit better but the one, single, best thing I did to this amp was to put in a JBL D-130 speaker in place of the stock Black Widow. The amp came alive and now sounds very, very good.
Speaker swapping is a voicing change for any amp and this swap seems to work very well with the tone controls and their chosen center frequencies. Unless you're really married to that Peavey 'midrange honk' sound, this is a very hip upgrade for this amp model.
Steve French's observation is correctly right on-point for most potential JBL upgraders.
Also, upgrading the reverb sound in this amp helps out everything else and puts some needed airyness back into the equation. The mod is posted on this board.
With one of the above preamp mods, the reverb mod and a JBL full range 15" speaker, you'll have a modern steel amp that you can really enjoy and will be in a league apart from earlier NV 400 models.

Tim, do you have the "mod" in your 400? If not, be advised the mod will do far more to improve your tone than a speaker swap! ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif) |

I Have a nashville 400 with a JBL K-130-4 that I played through for years. The amp has no mods and is an older model.I play every Friday and Saturday at tke local clubs.I took the JBL out one time and put in a Black widow and did not tell the band I was going ot do it.The first song we did the guitar player wanted to know if I had changed my amp settings as the amp sounded so transistor like to him.I told him what I did and he asked me if I needed help putting the JBL back in.
I now play through another nashville 400 with the Lemay mod and a black widow speaker and it sounds fine.I have not tried the JBL with the modified 400 yet. |

I put the JBL into the NV400. WOW! I like the sound...
Now to decide which amp to take to the gig...it's between the WEBB 6-14E or the NV400/JBL..
I finally did something good by putting the JBL in ...
Thanks for ALL of your comments and tips!

Can the JBL really handle the power if played hard? The JBL power rating is much lower than the BW. |

It could be a great combination, but IMO the N400 with the Mod and the "correct" Black Widow makes the amp sing. I can't imagine a better amp for steel, but you have to make sure you have the 1501 (not the shallow basket) and definately not the 1502 which came with many of the earlier N400's. The 1502 was really designed for bass guitar and not steel. So...you might try that combination also. |

if you want a good vintage sweet speaker that can still handle some power, twice to be exact than the d130f but its got an alnico mag on it and will kill the e jbl i dont want hurt anybody feelings about a peavey im just not a peavey fan.
but the K 130 is the speaker. of course IMHO
