I bought a Dunlop 2 and 3/4 " X 3/4" Jerry Byrd bar from Scotty's on his recommendation. Someone gave me a similar Dunlop bar when I bought a used steel from him. They are identical in length and diameter but one bar has a typical rounded nose and the other seems to be made from a harder material and has a much smaller rounded nose, almost beveled .Did Dunlop make two different models of the same dimension bar ? They don't mark their bars except on the clear plastic container it comes in.I didn't get that on the one given me.
I prefer the 2 and 3/4" length for slants but I wish it could be just an ounce or so heavier. I tried a 7/8" by 2 3/4 bar but it's a little slower when slanting .Comments appreciated.

Pop the end cap off ... and you will see that there is a hollow cavity in the Dunlop.
Get some "split-shot" fishing sinkers ... and fill that cavity with them ...
The lead is soft and will "pound down" well ... back side of a iron nail w/ hammer. protect the nose by doing this on a folded terry cloth towel.
I've been doin' this for many years ... works great ... adds just enough weight.

Oh I forgot ... Over the years, it seems the Dunlop JBs 2 3/4" x 3/4" have changed.
I have several ... and some are abit shorter and fatter than others ... some have more conical noses ... etc.

If you are already spending close to $20 on a Dunlop 2 3/4" x 3/4" and the quality and consistency of these are hit or miss, why not spend $30 and get a stainless steel bar from Jim Burden?
www.bulletbars.com
He will consistently meet these specs each and every time.

Thanks for the information Rick . I'm going to try and pop that end cap off or drill it so I can get it out. |

I've had my JB Dunlop Bar for many years. It measures 3/4”x2¾” and has a near perfect round-nose. The cap on the back-end is Red. I really don't use it now since I've switched to a Pearse Hawaiian Bar which is 2 7/8” x 3/4”. I also have a custom-made bar that is 3/4”x 2 7/8”. I know that one is solid. I also have the same solid custom-Bar for 10-str. 3/4”x3¼”. For me, Tremelo/Vibrato is more effective with the 3/4” Bars.

Gerald , thanks for your response and suggestion. I do have two nice bars from Jim that he made to my requested size
( 2 and 3/4 X 7/8 and a 3 and 1/8 by 3/4 ) although I'm usually using the Dunlop JB as it's nose shape and size are just right for my hand size for slanting operation. I just wish the weight was a little more than 4.5 oz.'s. I drilled the back of the Dunlop out and am going to add some lead per Rick's suggestion. John , I'm not familiar with the Pearse bar , how much does yours weigh ?
thank you |
