I have a 10-5 on my Marlen U-12. It sounds good to me and everyone whom I have worked with.
I think, a pickup that sounds good to you is one with the amount of windings to get the sound you want. If you know what sound you want, I think you can get a single coil pickup wound to your liking and be happy.
I found the sound I like and leave the switch on that tap all the time.

John-I like the sound of the Emmons single coils-However,I have had some humbuckers that seem to sound and sustain better higher up on the neck so I thought the George L 10-5 would give me several sounds-I play regular guitar too and I like having a palet of different sounds-can you describe the 5 different sounds this pickup and switch gets?I know there is 2 single coil sounds and 1 dual coil and 2 in between-but I want to know what they sound like--

Billy.. I LOVE the 10-5.. I have had two of them on two totally different guitars. You can go from a big fat humbucker sound to a nice bright single.. It is hard to describe the exact tone, everyone hears tone a little differently.

I may try to find another as a matter of fact. I am NOT sure they are still available. If you can't find one, contact Carter Steel Guitars. They put one on a new Carter about a year ago,and may be able to get one for you.

In my opinion, the 10-5 is one of the very best pickups ever made for the steel. I understand the full humbucker switch position is the exact same pickup as the 10-1 GeorgeL pickup, which a lot of guys use,and which can be ordered on some new steel guitars.

I would say you can't go wrong with a 10-5 if you can find one.. I used one for many years... I thought it was terrific... bob
