My Goodrich pedal has just started making a scratching noise towards the closed end of the throw. While it's almost not noticible when playing in a band setting, I'm doing some recording this weekend.

I've found some posts talking about oiling the pot, but have never done such a thing.

Can anyone walk a complete electronics moron through the process? I'm assuming a three-in-one oil would do the trick.

Thanks!

Do not use oil !!!
The inside of the pot needs to be sprayed with "contact cleaner" available at electronic supply stores and Radio shack.
The pots I have seen in Goodrich pedals are sealed pots and meant to be replaced rather than cleaned.
I have removed the cover from the pots by bending the tabs and pulling it off, then spray the inside of the pot with contact cleaner and replace the cover.
If this sounds like something you don't want to attempt, replace the pot.
Good luck .......JD

Thanks John. What is involved with changing the pot? Where would I go about getting one?

Scotty has some info on string winding of the pedals at www.scottysmusic.com .
He may have the pots. I think Bobbe Seymour has them also.
You have to take the pulley off of the shaft, remove the shaft nut. The pot can then be removed.

If you take it apart and things go south on you regarding getting it strung up right, give me a holler so you can look inside mine.

What you need is CaiLube MCL:
http://www.caig.com/

Lots of other good electronics cleaning stuff here as well. You can usually find this at a good electronics store. Or maybe at the Sam Ash Pro Audio Group, 162 West 48th St, New York, NY 10036

Lawrence
I'm in the process of changing all the
pots on my pedals & I got them
from Scotty - I have tried the cleaning
routine and it is marginal at best and in
one case it made the noise worse !
I'm not suggesting that it wrong to try
but you might save yourself some frustration
if you call Scotty and get a new one .

There 24 bucks a pop but well worth the
clean sound .

That's what I did.

Before I did though, I used to take the pots apart, and what would cause the scratchiness was the brass brush holder starting to scrape the pot surface after wearing the graphite like brush down even with it.

I'd get through by carefully filing a bit if the brass holder down. It only worked til I got a new pot ASAP.

With new ABEJ pots there was a couple month "break in" period until they got quiet, then they lasted 500-700 or more gigs.

Anybody that tries a Hilton that I've heard of ended up getting one.

I went 23 years at 70% volume.

I had to change my pot in my goodrich volume pedal, I tried to spray it first, but it lasted only a week, I have the L10k goodrich volume pedal, with a 10k pot in it, Scotty has these at scotty's music, I ordered one and it came and I put it in and now it works fine, I could convert it to a L120 and do away with the circuitry inside and go with 500k pot, maybe next time I will. steveb.

Another thing you can do while you have the cover off of the Pot is to drill a 1/8” hole in the cover so that the next time it gets noisey, you won't have to open it again! Use a fibre-pen to mark the hole before you remove it from the pedal. That way the hole will always be within site to add cleaner the next time without disturbing any adjustments! (Just a ‘stab-in-the-dark place!)

. . . and if ya do drill a small hole just big enough to get the 'straw' (the plastic 'tube' that comes with the spray-can of whatever you're gonna spray in there), be sure to drill slow, and to drill upward so that the 'chips' (material that you are drilling through) don't go inside the pot where they can get caught up in the internal workings of the pot.

Lawrence,
I too have tried all that..the drilling..I have taken them apart..carefully bending the little tabs..all that works for AWHILE..dirt seems to find its way in there..plus the "new" pots made in Mexico..are not as good as the older ones..anyway..but we can't get those anymore either..anyway..after all the aggrevation of winding that stupid rope around the shaft with needlenose.. go out and buy the Hilton..light pedal..and you will be writting this same message to somebody on here..someday... just like i'm doing now.

After having to cancel a recording session due to the scratchy pot syndrome I watched eBay until I found an old Goodrich "Steel Man" light pedal (I can't afford a Hilton, YET) and while I kept the passive unit (which by then had a new pot anyway) for a spare, I'll never use again it unless I have to. The used Goodrich cost me less than a new passive one and works great.

I changed the pot in my Goodrich 120 once.
Right before I sold that SOB. Got a Hilton and never looked back. It's one of the best investments you'll ever make as a steeler.
