I got the steel king and used it about 3 weeks ago on my main gig. I turned it up, pealed the paint and cause blood to pour from the ears of the folks in the front row.
This weekend I tried it again. I put the speaker in a separate cabinet and the amp head in a separate box due to the 66 lbs up and down out of my van etc. The speaker box being shallower meant the bass was harder and I could add bass with the tone control.
If you turn up the master the treble and the bass become brighter and bassier. But if you turn up the channel (12:00) and leave the master down (10:00) this does not happen, you get the same tone just louder.
I love the speaker to death it is clean and clear. I have been a PV guy for years but this new Fender speaker is just great. As soon as they become available I will buy another for a backup.
At the settings posted above the amp has plenty of volume.
Sam Marshall from Fender told me this amp was 5 years in the making. He also told me that Buddy told him to make it sound like 1963, when you crank the treble it does.
Would love to hear from others about their FSK and how they are doing now that time has passed a little.
The sound guy likes the presence and alive sound it has.
With my PP, TT's, Hilton, Black Box and FSK, we are talking some in your face sweet steel sound now.

Larry,
I couldn't agree with you more...wait till you put more hours on this speaker...It smoothes out and still gives you those great high's ....Great speaker for sure, and a great amp !!.. The versitility in the EQ is what sold me , and that old Fender sound didn't hurt either ....Jim |

Got mine just before Christmas. Couldn't be happier!Soo easy to find "my" tone I couldn't believe it!NO problem cutting through the mix with this baby and the sound guy likes it almost as much as I do!
Yes its a little heavy but my Sho~Bud is no light weight either. I guess if I can carry one I can carry the other, besides I found a wonderful invention...wheels!
and the best part..this one place we play has GIRLS who ask if they can help us carry

Yeah, most players insist on automatically
setting the master all the way up right off
the bat. Mainly since that's the way they've set other amps in the past. That's not the
case with this amp. I set both the Master and
Volume straight up (12 o'clock) and it's the
same output level as other amps with their
Masters on full. Then you can always boost the
Master volume if you have to & kick in the
limiter to cut down on the distortion.

A thousand humble apologies, Larry, for my choice of phrase. I wouldn't have said it if I didn't have some history of contacts with you regarding our couple of buy/sell deals, talking about gear, tone, etc. and felt I sort of knew you enough to fun you a bit. The only reason I would consider you more of a gear hound than me is that I lack your experience and your developed ears. Hence, I don't trust my ears sufficiently to know when it's time to try something else (as opposed to just assuming my ears are having one of those days) or going back to something I once rejected, in pursuit of the ultimate tone that will cause me to stop searching. I'm babbling.
My reference to "flavor of the month" is most certainly and positively just a friendly jibe. Please forgive any offense caused. Your quest continues to interest and educate me. |

Maybe the "average" has gotten a lot better..

Robert if you are refering to the Steel King they retail at about $1000, sell for a little less than $700 most places. The more I get a chance to use it the more I like the cleanliness, it really cuts to the back wall.

Eric when you take into consideration the real steel that you and Harley and Doug and Dale and Robin and Mitch and Ray and Pete play I am humbled because I do not play 1/4 of the stuff any of you play. It just is not what I do. I tend to just play around on the steel with little licks and tricks here and there stuffed in between the words of a song. It just happens to be on the steel guitar. All of you have spent the time capturing the styles and licks of Buddy and Hal and Paul etc and I love to hear all of you play.
This is not the poor me act here, I know exactly the amount of knowledge I have compared to others and how they execute it and how I do it. I am just happy to be one of the boys, and a finer bunch of boys you won't find anywhere.

Well Larry, I can only speak for myself, but anytime I come out to hear any of the players around town, I come home with things to "work on". You're especially in that category. I like your "gearheadedness", and get a kick out of your being dissatisfied with things that I would love to be able to sound like.
There aren't many of the players around town that I don't look up to in one way or another.
Even now when "jobs" aren't as plentiful, nor do they pay what they used to, which was damn cheap to begin with, the 'community" here is something that I like being part of.
I miss those conventions we used to have at the Wheel, and the M&M etc.
Myself, it's hard for me to talk about my playing, except in terms of me, and I'm NEVER satisfied with what I play. I can hear somebody else play out of tune, time, or just plain wrong chords, and I'm still wholly entertained.
It just dawned on me last nite that I am BARELY ready to "need" a new Steel. I can JUST NOW play things I was taught 25 years ago, and only now that it is finally worn out, (all the guys will attest to that part) am I finally ready for a new one.
God, things move slow sometimes when you have to fit "A Life" inbetween yourself and learning "Kicks to Boot", with all the 10-12 hour days of abusing your fingers, and wearing out your mind, be it behind the wheel of a truck, a set of chain binders, a lathe, a tool bench, or whatever. Then you have to find a group of people that you can fit a THIRD of it in with.
All in all I have liked most, the fact that I or any of us can call each other at any time, and get an amp, a guitar, or argue any topic, and know that we have friends that have the same interests, problems, joys etc when it comes to playing steel...
Gotta run, airport security awaits me trying to explain what my bullseye bar is.
Can't wait to get behing Rip Edwards' old SHo~Bud, done up in a way he'd be proud of.
By the way, if it hadn't been for you introducing me to him, I'd have never have gotten it.

Terry my tele copy sounds great with the FSK. Sam Marshall got a report from the NAMM show that tele players were salivating all over their guitars about the sound.

I play my strat through mine and I like the sound I get without too much tweeking from my steel setting.Lap steel sounds pretty darn good to my ears as well!

got my FSK today and my strat sounded better than my emmons although the emmons was good.
i'm hearing a buzz about the N112 haveing the tone but the one i got was bad to say the least, but it was one of the first ones, and maybe i just needed to give it more time.
I sure do like the idea of the two small amps but the FSK is the best so far
ive played on it about half a day.
Mike Brown your the greatest but I know you've got to be thinking about replacing the N1000. and beat the FSK because I dont care how long fender hasnt catered to the steel community they have an amp that is kicking some clarity butt.
Mike is there anything on Peavey's mind right now?

Can you give me a detailed review on the FSK...I'm really interested in it. I'd consider letting go of both my Webb and Evans FEV 500.
BTW, I'm finally getting back into steel after a 10 year hiatus of medical practice and blues guitar.
Hope I get a chance listen to you play next time I'm up in PDX.(I also wouldn't mind hearing that Eric West scoundrel either.) I bet you guys tear it up. |
