Bob--do a search of the forum for opinions on this---I've done this search before but I can't recall the definitive answer. But let's get some stuff straight---I'll stake this sardine sandwich I'm about to dig into that the pot you were advised to use was 500K ohms, not 500 ohms. And .25 Megs is 250K ohms so the two choices are not so far afield from each other after all. If I'm wrong, send me your address for me to mail the sandwich to.

I did a bit of searching on this and what I'm finding is that you can use a variety of values for the tone pot but the stock value was 250K (.25M).

Can I sweeten this deal with cash? Please don't make me eat this sandwich!

Click "search" at the top of the page (under 'add a reply') and input "fender volume tone" for starters---try any variations you want too--and select "electronics" and "any date". Plenty of unrelated stuff but some good info too.
Too late for the sardines. I ate 'em.

Bob --

Either value will work, but most folks these days prefer the 500K pot. What IS important is that you get an AUDIO TAPER pot. a linear pot will give you all the volume at one end of the pedal rather than spreading it out over the entire travel.

As far as smokes, sparks, etc. you will have to try real hard to get any of that from a volume pedal project, unless you hook it up to your amp's speaker out jack. dg

Dave, He was referring to the "tone" pot.
I don't see a problem with a 250K tone pot. It has a capacitor in series, which will increase the impedance.

Thanks all for the info !
I got this one under control !
I used the 500K pot in place of
the .25meg and its like a new pedal
I haven't used this fender pedal in
years - I dont want to admit how many !
I bought this thing when all the dirt on
earth was new !
& Jon don't send cash !
you were right !!

Thanks Guy's

I don't know about tone pots, but I have two Zum volume pedals. One has 250K, the other 500K. To my ear the 500 sounds sweeter.

The frequency response of a magnetic pickup will change with the resistance (impedance) of the load it sees. In our case, the pickup's typical load is the volume pot of the pedal or in the case of an active pedal, the input impedance of the first stage. With modern hi-z steel pickups you can hear a very significant difference in highs when you compare a 250k pot to a 500k pot. The lower the value, the more the highs disappear. 250k sounds pretty mellow. 500k sounds normal. Above 500k the tone differences are more subtle, but you gain more sparkle and pick attack sound as you approach 1meg. I noticed the most change between 200k and 600k when I was messing with load values. I had a ZB volume pedal that came with a 100k pot in it. Everything sounded dark and mellow with that pedal until I put a 500k in it. If you use a buffer device like a matchbox, black box, digital sustain, etc. then the value of the pot can vary widely without tone issues. It's what the pickup sees that effects the tonal response.

Thank you John, for pointing out my lapse. Changing the resistance of the TONE pot without also changing the associated cap would indeed change the high-pass response.
