I did a search in this group and see that this company has been discussed before, but he's got a new acoustic reso-pan prototype model pictured here:
http://www.industrialguitar.com
and a sound clip of that guitar here:
http://www.industrialguitar.com/resopandemo.mp3
I don't know if it's just me, but I think that thing sounds great. It's probably not appropriate for high volume, on stage use, but the mic'ed sound on the clip is really nice. I think it would be a great recording instrument.
I emailed Chris, the guy that owns the company, he's very accessible. He told me target for that instrument is $400 to $450.. He's prototyping now, with maybe a longer scale version coming. Hopes to have some to sell in late Oct.

That's quite a nice sounding sample. Sounds like they have another winner!

I agree, it sounds very good on this recording. And he ought to get a design award for low parts count and simplicity.
So why does it cost more than twice what a chinese wood reso guitar cost? Just curious. |

Bill,
The sound character I hear in the Reso-pan link you provided has a bit of electronics effects character to it that is beyond the sound of the guitar ....sounds like to me anyway. (Although I sure like the playing!). I don't know how this new prototype stacks up to the one made for Jason Lynn; But 2 MP3's of Jason on his Fouke reso are linked on this Fouke page ....or you can go direct by clicking here. I think there is quite a bit of meaningful difference in the deader sustain and less acoustic quality of the raw Jason Lynn tracks and the effects-enhanced track of the Dan Walsh track you provided. I'd personally want to hear more before I made a decision based upon that effects enhanced track.
Also, ...I've not seen one of these fouke Industrial Steels except in a number of pictures I've tried to look at closely; But it sure looks to me like the string angle geometry between the nut and tuner-posts ...particlularly for the middle 2 (for 6 strings) and middle 4 (for 8 strings) ...is pretty steep (hover mouse on bottom right of picture for a pop-up enlargement button). Maybe someone who can examine theirs or one closely and can give us a report on how well the string tends to stay on a post at such a sharp string angle.
Thank You,
Aloha,
Denny T~

Hi Denny,
I agree the recording technique is certainly a part of the appeal. In fact, I liked it so much, I asked Chris about it. Apparently, Dan Walsh created the MP3 and sent it to Chris, as he didn't know specifically how it was recorded. He forwarded my question to Dan, but I haven't heard from him yet.
All that said, while the track is definitely 'effects enhanced', I think there is something there to begin with as far as the character of the instrument. Also, since recording is my intended use, I didn't hear anything there that sounded out of the reach of my home studio, except the talent .
Like you, I'd like to hear more before I'd make up my mind.
