I am going to be on Oahu at the end of the month and wonder if anyone has recommendations of where I should go to see good steel playing.

I will be on the north shore or 3 days and then near Honolulu until for 3 days.

Check out the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association's website. One of the pages lists who is playing where in the islands.

As always, due to the nature of the live music biz, call ahead to make sure the event is still happening.

Patrick,

The "House Without A Key" (Halekulani Hotel) always has a good performance seven days a week from 5:30pm to 8:30pm -- you sit in the courtyard under the Kiawe tree with Diamond Head to the left and the ocean lapping on the beach and a Mai Tai in front of you while you're listening to whoever is performing that evening. A very tropical setting.

Have fun, Warren

It's slim pickin's these day's Patrick, for anything 'steel' in Hawaii. Hopefully you can make it in time for 'Steel Guitar Week' program next week at the Hale'kulani.

You can also find steel played nightly(?) in the late afternoon at the Moana Hotel's famous Banyon Tree Courtyard.

But, the best opportunities are-

Thursday 5-9pm at the Waikiki Beach Marriott(3rd fl. rooftop) for Genoa Keawe/Gary Aiko, w/Alan Akaka on steel, and whom ever else may drop in.

Sunday, same time/place, for Martin Pahinui/George Kuo/Arron Mahi, w/Bobby Ingano sitting in on steel this month.

Wish I had more to offer..., stay tuned in before you leave, you never know who may 'show up'.

HOT TIP- Honolulu's 'Borders' book store will present an evening with the Cazimero Bro's at the end of this month(28th,?). This in it's self would be worth catching, however, as he has in the recent past, I'm hoping Jeff Au Hoy will again join them on steel.

What's the happ's Jeff?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Is there anything on the north side of the island that I should look into? I'll be in Haleiwa for a few days.

Nothing on the NS for steel. But you might give Denny Turner a buzz and see what he sez. The Sugar Bar in Wai'a'lua is always fun, steel or not.
