Has anybody ever bought pearlescent swirly shrink plastic? Does anyone know if it is still made?
I was sitting here staring at my MOTS laps thinking how cool it would be to figure out how to do that stuff.
I like it so much I think I could shrink it on every wood project I ever make...
Am I right in thinking it was a heat-shrink type product?
I found some used in the model airplane hobby industry, but none with that cool old texture.
Ideas are welcome.
Thanks.

Someone still makes the stuff, because they still make pickguards out of it.
Maybe talk to a boutique guitar builder??

You can get a large sheet of it from Stewart-MacDonald, drum supply houses may have it too.
Here's a lap steel where I used the S-Mac stuff for the fretboard. http://members.cox.net/maricopaguitarco/misc3_image.jpg
I used a fretsaw to cut down through the top layer to the black center and did the markers in tortise pick material.
The Stew-Mac stuff is pretty thick (3 layer) and I don't know how flexible it would be. Back in the day at Fender I know they used acetone to soften the MOTS that went on the lapsteels. Maybe Jody Carver could shed some light.

I have a new Italia Modena guitar that's completely covered in the shrink MOTS. So it's definitely available somewhere. The Fender Custom Shop made a MOTS guitar for Danny Gatton. Maybe someone there can tell you where to get it. I think it would be great stuff to use in building a hot rod. Steering wheel, dash, etc.. I don't think that the stuff they make pickguards out of is what you're lookin' for. That stuff is thick. Real MOTS is pretty thin I believe. JB |

I have used this in the past and it is nice but sometimes it is hard to make it "Adhere" I usually keep some in stock and on those "Experimenting" days I will play around with. Also it is expensive. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works |
