Are you playing your steel thru a midi converter? If so what are you using and how do you like it? |

I am and I love it! My JV-1080 is loaded with four expansion cards and a PCM card. I haven't found a fiddle sound that's worth a darn yet, but keyboards, sax, horns, harmonica, squeeze box, etc. sound great!

It came with my IVL SteelRider. When they were in production they made both a 10 and a 12 string pickup. |

Even if I could find a 12 string midi pickup, I don't see how I could mount it. On my Marlen, the Geo-L pickup is close to the changer. If I mount it on the side away from the changer, my picks would probably hit it. On a lead guitar they are normally mounted between the rear pickup and the bridge. I don't think there is enough room on my Marlen..........JD |

Since the Steelrider is no longer made, I think there might still be hope for the steel guitarist intersted in MIDI. If you look at Emmett Chapman's Stick site, you will see that he offers Roland MIDI pickups with custom/modified string spacings for his instruments. (Try one sometime!)It would involve having two 5 or 6 string pickups installed and therefore mean that you would need 2 processors to run it. Maybe someone could persuade Roland to make a variation on their processors that could handle all 10 or 12 strings! Someone who could afford all this stuff might want to look into it at www.stick.com.

Al Petty used to sell a pickup and controller for steel guitar but he will unavailable for at least a few years (as most of you know). A few years ago, Buddy told me that Ronnie Neighbors may have some midi stuff (he wasn't sure). I never did contact him about it. I don't think I will ever find enough time to explore the world of midi, although I have always wanted to. |

will somebody be kind enough to tell me what a midi converter is? not that I will understand after I'm told.

I use a Roland GR 30 with GK 2 pick up,I use velcro to hold the pickup on my fretboard, olso the string spacing is different I slant the pickup so the strings are over the pickups metal receivers, the GR 30 is used for 6 string guitar but I dont use 1-2 or 9-10 strings, I found that you dont need those strings on standerd inst.licks, works fine for me, olso on piano you can get some awsome floyed cramer licks with the A pedal. |

Thank you Dave. I was able to understand parts of it anyway. sounds like a complicated device to me. course, it don't take much to be too complicated for me.

two kramer pitchriders and a anatek pocket
merger can be combined together for a 12 stg universal setup. You have to make your own pickup. You have to remove the guitar cable to the preamps, and jumper a pin in the cable to the pocket merger to provide 5 V DC.This is very
hard to do unless you know electronics.I
take two old pickups and reuse the magnets
and tiny bobbins and wind 4 Ohms ccw on each bobbin.Works like a dream.I have one completed less the power xfmrs and midi merger,That might be for sale or trade for steel. Chuck Abend |

Chuck, I am very interested in following up on your system design. What can I do to get more info regarding the work you have done? Sounds like you have done a great job researching this. |
