Does anyone know what Buddy Charleton used when he played with Ernest Tubb in the mid sixties? Was is reverb, echo or a combitation of both?

I think he used a Standel Custom amp, which might have had a reverb ( some of them did, some had a vibrato instead ). In the studio, an echo and reverb were both used, the emphasis was on reverb instead of a heavy slap back echo, depending on the song of course.

The first time I recorded with reverb was in the 1950's. They were still calling it echo at the time.

The little studio was on the 3rd floor of a building that had marble floors in the hallway, so they had us set-up and record in the hallway to achieve the effect.

By the 1960's all of the recording studios had the capability of electronically adding reverb.

I don't know what the Buddys were using but the tape delay units such as WEM Copycat and Echoplex were the thing at at that time. If not for the problem of keeping a good tape on it, those would be hard to beat by anything we have today. I had a Copycat, a Hybrid Standel Custom and a 1960 Pedalmaster permanent that I built and some of the old tapes that I made with that setup sounds as good as anything I can do now.

I still have my echoplex and 1/2 dz tapes. I use it occasionally and it really sounds good.

I sold my Echoplex for $10.00 at the garage sale I held before moving in 1992.

At one time the Troubadours had a deal with Evans so he might have been using one. Whatever he had it sure was good.

Most times I saw him, he just used reverb...usually a lot of it, especially on the slow songs. And man! What a tone he had! One of Tubb's favorite songs of mine was "Pass The Booze". On that one recording, he might have used an echo chamber on it. As far as all his other Tubb stuff he recorded on, I can't think of any other song that might have had echo.

Charleton's tone and touch was one of my biggest inspirations back in the '60s.

Gene,
I read that Les Paul did his first recordings in his bathroom, because the tile gave him the echo that he wanted. Sounded pretty good to me .

Boy, Gene, you sure are an old #&*^ to remember that stuff. I started playing before electricity. My first guitar was a "kerosene guitar". (why do I feel like I have started something here?)...JD

When I saw Buddy in the 60s I'm pretty sure he was playing through a tube Standel. His Sho-Bud is pictured on my Sept 12th post "Old Sho-Buds". I bought it about four years later.

I talked with Buddy this morning, and he verified that he never used an echo chamber when he played with Ernest Tubb, just reverb.

I always loved the BE sound on "Half a Mind".

Insofar as echo goes, I use a Dan Echo, but have heard, the Dane Electro REEL ECHO is a dead ringer for the tape echo of years ago.

Reel Echo is a good unit, I've used one for sometime now. It's exactly like advertised; a tape echo sound without the tape hassle. Time will tell how good they are in the long run, the jacks at least are pretty cheap and lo-quality.

I've been using a"Mr.Echo"pedal lately for delay...it's pretty close to an Echoplex...real warm sounding...I can't remember who made it...saw it in an ad in"Vintage Guitar"and bought it at Rock Block Guitars in Nashville...it doesn't seem to change the tone much...which is always a good thing...
