why did Fender do it that way

the bridge pickup on a strat and tele are angled so that the high strings get picked up closer to the bridge accenting high frequencies, seems to me reversing this would bring out a little more warmth in the high strings adding to a better balanced sound. Even on my steel when I get a nice tone on my wound strings, my upper strings sound a little thin, I can't help wondering what a pickup angled away at the high strings may sound like

If I'm not mistaken, when Leo Fender was designing his electric guitars, he was looking for a lot of treble. That's why they are the way they are.

ya Leo was looking for treble,
I have heard of guys buying a left handed bridge and putting it on a right handed guitar thus reversing that angle and diminishing the treble while adding punch and more twang to the low strings, makes sense to me.

That "angle" is part of what gives their guitars a unique sound. Those with a sharp eye will notice there's a different angle on the Tele bridge pickup than there is on the Strat bridge pickup! That, and the different bridge designs, are most of what makes these guitars sound different.

I've long been a proponent of an adjustable-position pickup on a pedal steel, but so far...nobody's listening.
