I would bet that whoever played this thing would attach something to the knobs to make them easier to access while playing; maybe some kind of arm or extension. Danny Gatton used to put a little rubber toy with arms on it on top of one of his knobs. It was a pretty funny sight.

the holes in the tuning pans look like a tuning-puller-pedal device was hooked to it maybe, judging from hole locations
