If there was one best, they wouldn't offer so many choices.

Describe what sounds you like, what style you play, do you like mellow or bright, etc.

I like XR16s, a lot of folks here like TrueTones, and others.

There are some soundclips with the different pickups on the Carter website.
Listen to them sitting to the side of the loudspeakers, not straight on front of them; you'll hear the difference better.
I am not sure, but I have read on the forum is that 710's are suitable for the pot volume pedals and the 910 is suitable for the electronic volume pedals. Everybody seems to rave about the XR16. Just do a search on the forum and you will get the idea.

Robert, pickups sounds are very subjective. I have a Danny Shields pickup on one of my guitars and I did not like it. So the guitar was stored for a while. I recently set it up again and it sounds wonderful. I find I change my mind all the time. Even with my Emmons Push-pull guitar, I sometimes think the sound is too trebly and at other times it is great.

Also keep in mind that the pickup is like a microphone; it can only reproduce what comes out of the guitar and your hands. The coloring of the sound should come from your amplifier.

When I had mine built last year Ann told me that the factory recommended the E-66 for E9, 10-1 for C6. That is what was installed in my guitar and I am extremely pleased with the tone.

I think the Carter is one of the finest pedal steel guitars ever built.

Robert, most beginners would be very hard pressed to tell the differences between one pickup and another. The major decision in pickups is between single-coils and humbuckers. All the ones you mentioned are humbuckers, so the differences in sound between them would be pretty small.

I ordered a new Carter in the fall of 2002 w/ TW pups, DID NOT like the sound at all, Bud Carter suggested the XR-16s - which made a world of difference in that guitar. I'm pretty sure BE's new JCH also has XR-16s too. One of my XR-16s developed a short, so I used a True Tone while I waited for a new XR-16 and while the True Tone sounded pretty good, I cound not wait to get the XR-16 back in there -no hum and a little more "grainy in yer face" kinda sound. I think a lot of it might be matching certain pickups to certain guitars. I have a PP with 710s that sounds great, and another with original single coils that sounds great too, but I can't use it everywere because of the buzz....so I am leaning towards the humbuckers these days....
