Hi,
I've been taking the "rack" approach in my preamp/effects accumulation. Now I need the rack itself.
What are recommended features and manufacturers/models.
Also, how important is a "power conditioner".

| I like SKB racks best but, there are other brands utilizing similar construction. I have an SKB DJ Shuttle right now so I look down toward the floor and see what the current settings are. Power conditioners can be handy to keep the power wiring neat and orderly and protect the Rack gear from bad house electric wiring problems (better safe then a fried rack effect) |

Alan,
I have an MBT 4 space, light, and I like the "doors/caps" at each end, has mount rails on both ends so you can mount short stuff on the bottom.

Yeah the DJ Shuttle has the rails on a diagonal on the top and has the front face available for use too.
Here's a pic some of the stuff in the pic is gone and the unit has basically been simplified.
The pic does give you a better idea of the shape of a shuttle. I find it handy for looking down at to let me know what my current setting are also handy for quick editing. Might have to get a small rack to put in front or to the side for quick edits at eye level (getting lazier as I get older when I was younger on the floor was good enough ;D )[This message was edited by Alan Kroeger on 18 July 2004 at 04:19 PM.] |

| I'm with Kevin. You will never go wrong dealing with Bob Dell of Dell Cases. Bob built a 4 space rack for me and the quality is top shelf. It's the rack I've wanted for a long time and it will last me the rest of my playing days (which I hope is a long time). |

I'm putting a plug in for Gary Phillips. I just got a 6 space vertical rack unit from Gary with the doors on the bottom and power strip and jacks built it. Loooooks good!

Tom,
I've been using Mesa-Boogie's shock-mounted portable rack systems exclusively for many years, and if you want something "nice", I suggest taking a look at them. I've got one each of their 12-space and 16-space units, both on large, small castors, and yes, they're a bit spendy ($450-700), but they're the best I've encountered. Unfortunately, they don't advertise them well or even make information on them readily available. However, they are accessible by special order through Mesa-Boogie directly (and some MB dealers), and I'd be happy to send along a digital photo or two of mine if you'd like. Just let me know.

Tom, I like the light weight of the SKB rack, very durable too.
With the cost of expensive processors and amps, I do use a power conditioner just to be safe.
