What is the skinny on these amps. I know the twin was about 100 watts. Do these amps sound differently from the 100 watt twin and if so how much different. Were they popular or was this something that Fender made for a short period of time and then stopped? Any Info would be helful...Thanks |

The first B/F Twin Reverbs were rated at 80 watts (more like 65, really, in clean power). The S/F T/R's went to 100 watts initially, and they closed out the tube/point-to-point wiring version with a 135 watt "ultra-linear" model. Any one does a decent job on steel, but the 135-watt one probably works best due to the extra power.
Also, don't exclude the Super Twin Reverb. UnGODly tone (built in graphic EQ) and power (160 watts). Quite heavy, and the built-in verb's not the best. But...this is the "sleeper" amp of all time, and with just an external stomp-box delay (like an RV-5), it will put any other combo amp to shame.
Awesome is the only way to describe it. |

I've got a 135 watt Twin, with EVM-12l's in it, weighs a TON. Currently re-working a 100 watt, master volume Twin, converting to blackface (sorta), with an EVM-15L in it. Still oughta weigh a ton...
Still nothing like 'em. |

I completely agree with Donny. The 135w TRs (also Dual Showman Reverb heads) have the most clean headroom for steel, although they weigh about 10 lbs more. Putting any silver face Fender to black face specs seems to warm them up a bit, but at the expense of clean headroom. "Harder" and "softer" tubes sold by some places have a similar effect. There is also a very rare amp head called the 140 that seems to have been a 135w ultralinear TR type head with the tremolo replaced with 5-band graphic EQ - dynamite amp for steel.
I have a Super Twin Reverb rated at 180 watts with the 5-band knob EQ. To deal with the weight issue I put it in a Dual head cabinet (50 lbs.) and play it through two seperate 15" speakers. With this setup I have no trouble being heard at rock club levels, and it's all glorious Fender tube sound. By the way, the wattages we are talking about here are the watts stamped at the speaker jack. It seems to be the recommended minimum power handling for a speaker, and the real output of the amps seems to be a little less than that.
At the other end is the Pro Reverb, rated at 60 watts. These are the same size cabinet of a Twin and can hold a 15" speaker. This converts it to essentially Stevie Ray Vaughn's old Vibroverb. I have one of these for practice. It weighs about 60 lbs., which is about as much as Nashville 400, and those tube watts will dang near match a NV 400 for volume. There are lots of these around at reasonable prices, and for people who don't play loud venues, they have enough volume and weigh a little less than a Twin. |
