I just got off e-bay, browsing for an effects unit for steel & fiddle. It is mind boggling. What is the difference between these units, & which are best for steel??
1. Alesis Midiverb III
2. Alesis Multiverb III
3. Alesis Quadraverb
4. Alesis Microverb
5. Alesis Q20 Multi Effects
Appreciate your input.. Thanks ...John

I have a Q20, it is the top of the line for Alesis.has Digital in and out, XLR Connectors in and Out, TRS Phone Jacks In and Out, Built in Power Supply, Its Quieter Than The Previous Quadraverbs/Midiverbs. Its really a more professional version of the Quadraveb 2. Its a 20 bit unit, but sounds great, clean and low noise. Its versatile in that you can set up a maximum of 10 effects blocks on the display and graphically connect them any way you choose, has 100 factory presets and 200 user presets. Good unit, make sure you get the manual with it. Documentation is very good and easy to understand. I use mine for CLEAN six String guitar and it would also be excellent on Steel.
I bought mine new last year year at a bargain since it was discontinued several years ago and passed up a Lexicon MPX 550 24 bit unit for slightly more money. I haven't been disappointed with it yet.[This message was edited by John Floyd on 21 June 2004 at 03:23 AM.] |

I think most of those have Wall Wart Power supplies, which I'm Strongly against. Everything in my rack has Built in Power Supplies and XLR Patch Cables, with grounds lifted on each cable at the sending component and Humfree Isolation Tabs for the rack rails. This eliminates ground loops and therefore minimizes hum. Each component in the rack is grounded thru its AC Power Cord and safety is not an issue. Thats the Professional way to do it. Costs a little more but thats the only way to keep the hum down with single coil pickups. The Single coils will pick up a little on some stages, but it is still manageable. |

Actually, I was directing my comment to John Olynyk! I think he is in the market for a unit to use with his steel and fiddle. I thought he might want to check out what Chris had for sale.
